Anyone run something like this for larger wood:

http://www.equipementswoody.com/chargeuses_%C3%A0_bois.htm

I was thinking of getting one of these instead of a mini skid. Probably a medium size one that I could pull with my truck or pull behind a ATV on bigger propreties. They can also come equiped with a winch.

I dont work on many gated propreties and I also have access to a portable saw mill to make some lumber if I want to.

So looking for some insight...

I've given something like that some thought but.... I think that a mini skid and dump trailer combo gives more versatility and similar lifting capacity. It'd be hard to load crappy stumps and jagged pieces of wood onto a picket trailer. Even if the fit, you'd still have to unload one by one with the grapple instead of dumping.

I also think that you could get more production by skidding logs with a quad to a landing then loading with the mini skid or just hiring a self loader for larger amounts.

They are pretty cool toys but for the average production arb, but mini skid plus trailer is better IMO. A quad for skidding would be great too, i don't know why i haven't bought one of them yet.

Good thing i speak french with that link!

did you get prices on any of those units?

The small ones go for 8-9K. Not bad at all. Sure cheaper than a mini+trailer.

If ever I do got one of these, I'd like to get some decent lifting power. Like the 115-HD lift 2000lbs max. I'd have to go meet the guys there and tell them my plan, see if they could come up with a cool design.

That's not a bad price but the smallest unit only lifts 600lb no? Not 'nuff.

Although, we've done a few forest beautification jobs where that thing behind a quad would have kicked adze.

Three words: Minis are awesome

Mini plus dump trailer about $25k if you're lucky. It's more but it's worth it i think.

When I had an ATV I really looked hard at the loader trailers. Of course I would have given it the 'Tom Touch' and changed it over to a box instead of a bunk. Having road ready undercarriage would be a huge plus too. The ATV could be loaded inside for travel.

When I would work with mini-skids I could move brush and small logs a lot faster. Staging the brush at the chipper and then zip back for another load.

The mini could lift so that would win the time competition if bigger logs were involved.

if I were to do it all over again from the ground up I would get a mini instead of an ATV.

Get through small gates, under trees, and other tight spaces is where the mini shines. Shop around for a good used mini. $4-6000 is a reasonable price. Got mine at the lower end. Same for dump trailors. 8x14 dump for $5300 new. End dump and sides fold down also.
