Today....

Oh peachy! Another 6-12 inches of snow today. This MF winter just isn't going to let me go. Mother Nature is getting even with me for all the evil things I have done. I saw her Ned. I saw Claudia. Her face was all covered with worms.

Another wonderful spur boot to check out is the La Sportiva Makalu. Just doesn't get any better in a pair of spurs. They run a little narrow and short so a 1/2 size bigger than your normal size is recommended.
Ordered a pair of the Makalus. I have narrow feet, so that is good. Did get a 1/2 size up. Also installed the Velcro straps on the caddy pads. Thanks for the info!

I watched a climber break a Silky handsaw blade in mid-cut, just snapped in half. Gettin' too aggressive I suppose
I think on certain cuts where the blade is horizontal, vibration can build up that can become destructive to the steel. As the pull stroke happens, the vibration frequency increases.

I've always heard that better quality(or maybe higher carbon) steel will break before it gets kinked/bent. Any knife makers have input on this? @Vicente
Depends on the type of steel and how good the heat treat is, you can have steel that's really hard and still doesn't break easily. Hc steel is generally tougher than SS at the same rc. If the heat treat is good/optimal it should be able to take a bend at 61rc and still not snap most of my hc steel knives need to be bent pretty hard to straighten out even a small warp I've never broken one doing it, that said bending them that hard isn't easy large bench vise and 3 points of contact. If the steel isn't overheated during heat treat or left untempered it's usual not going to bend and stay bent during any kind of normal use. Steels that are really hard wearing and have a large carbide structurelike d2 aren't as tough as steels with a smaller carbide structure so more likely to snap instead of take a slight bend than those with a smaller carbide structure. It's all about picking the c right steel for the job I'm not sure what silky uses, its not something like d2 or we would see a lot more snapped blades probably a heat treat issue with a batch, it could also partly be do to repetitive stress if it keeps getting bent in the same area during use.
