Today....

I'm putting the saw down today and going to look at a new to us crane! Looking at a link belt 70 ton. Hopefully its in good shape and we make a deal on it. We have a 5'9" dbh oak that we are going to have to take apart with a crane shortly. Our 35 ton is a bit light for that monster.
Total let down. Got to love when stuff is misrepresented. Drove hours to go look at it and it wasnt functional.

One of the largest hedge trimming jobs I’ve ever taken on. Over 10+ hours non-stop of trimming. Then more the following morning. No lift or bucket all done with two ladders, a board to use as a plank to walk in between the two, and an extension trimmer, electric trimmer, and hand pruners / shears.

Someone had topped a section of hedge in the past, it was all bare and little to no growth at one part all in the middle of the top area. Such a shame.

And these are only parts of the job, there was more hedges / shrubs than just what’s in these pics.

Got back from work just in time before dark to see two large doug-fir limbs perched over the shop roof with skylights, and parking spots.

Got them both secured with a rope, and hit the ground without using my head lamp. Tomorrow or soon, my GF can go get them down... her trees.

Lots of end- weight reduction pruning to be done.

I trim shrubs and trees for an elderly friend. It's usually at least a day and half. Just a ridiculous number of shrubs. Here's most of what's along one of the two driveways, a small fraction of the total.

(The cubic loropetalums are >4 ft tall. The picture tends to make the shrubs look small.)

Not sure if that suggestion is going to go over too well...

I got permission from my neighbor Monday to remove some stumps and roots just over our property line. He's recovering from a shoulder injury and surgery, and I was looking for a project offering a lot of exercise.

Almost all of them had embedded fence wire, so I didn't use the saw at all. Post-hole digger, mattock, and a few tugs with the old Silverado ftw. I had to split one into chunks with the sledge and wedges to get to the roots. The oak and cherry were surprisingly solid despite being there for nearly twenty years.

A couple years ago, I was doing a small clearing project for a gent that was building a new house on an old, overgrown lot. I was there for about 4 days with my mini excavator, spider lift, chipper, dump trailer, and a couple trucks.

Across the street, in a neighboring front yard, there was a 30” stump. The day I arrived, the neighbor had just started to pull the surrounding soil away a maddox to expose the buttress roots. By day 2, he had them all cut as close to the bole as he could. By day 3, the roots were all pulled up. By day 4, the bole was sitting in the hole on its side.

I was impressed with his diligence. I was also grateful for having hydraulics on my side of the street!

Her eyes lit up (in the good way) at the suggestion.

She had never rigged down anything. So far, free-falling limbs only from the first 50' of a cedar removal on spurs, rec climbing, and the tree top music video we shot around 100' up, near the beginning of Covid.

She's never typed

Strung up my 6' tall star and 300' of lights two days ago. There is a big cavity full of water and rot about halfway up the leader that the star is on so I set a second line for peace of mind. Turns out it was incredibly helpful for work positioning which I'm sure doesn't surprise many of you working climbers. Two lines plus a lanyard made it easy for me to get exactly where I needed without too much exertion. And everything survived the winds so far! Hard to get a good night photo with all the light from the damn parking lot next door.

Nice!

I often will utilize a second rope for work positioning on bigger widespread trees, or if there are multiple leaders etc. Two ddrt lines. I do primarily pruning work. Definitely can be helpful. Sometimes I’ll be tied into both, sometimes I’ll hop off one and hop on another, etc.

I’m thinking about buying a Unicender and starting to incorporate srt.

Good stuff! Nice sized tree.
