Today....

Well I've shared enough cool stuff here that it's only fair I share the mistakes as well. Today while taking down a fir I tossed out about a 10' skinny log, rotating it to land flat. It landed dead center on a piece of exposited bedrock that was angled downhill. That sent the log about 40' airborne right into the side of my truck, smashing the mirror, denting both doors and top of the cab. First time in 13-ish years of work I've ever damaged a vehicle, but at least it was mine and not a customers. Sort of a freak accident, but the physics all make sense and it's my mistake. I've got new mirrors and rain guards in the mail already, now I'll need to talk to my insurance and a body shop about fixing it. Never had to file a claim before and may just pay cash, not sure how to handle it yet and need to get more information. Pretty frustrating, but mistakes happen and life goes on.

Live and learn.
Life in the fast lane unfortunately!
Thanks for sharing.
Under $5k would probably be better offf paying out of pocket IMO.

I’m not an adjuster, nor can know the full extent of the damage from here, BUT…

Pay out of pocket if at all possible, otherwise you’ll pay more over the long run. You can find replacement doors for short money and swap over all the interior trim and component, then have it all painted. The only part I would leave to a professional body shop is the cab roof.

Good thing the bed is ok. Those are made of 100% pure unobtanium. Your truck is really nice and worth fixing IMO.

Yes, it worked out great til the end of course, too low. Had to pancake the last 15’ or so
Somewhere here I posted a job with @SoftBankHawks (Paul) and Seiji where we double choked a stump cut with 2 portys and pulled the last log into an overhead rig. Like your scenario, we had no lay to fell it. The rig basically caught the log without it ever hitting the ground and then we cranked in the rig while letting out the 2 portys and belayed the log uphill like a super slow motion rocket taking off at an angle. I’ll see if I can find it…

The overhead rig might have been a V through a block at the too of the log. I remember it was a lot of rope on site!

An empress tree restoration/ refuction after topping and regrowth. They had a recent leader tearout damaging the time roof on the outbuilding.

Canopy raising a doug-fir for a gravel truck delivery for the driveway.

Leather tube cadmium savers are super useful.
