I find this argument very interesting as long as we discuss trusting the soundness of the wood, minimum diameter, types of notches (I guess everyone will do a smaller notch when still tied on top),etc. But saying that the reason for not doing it is having one less thing to remember doesn't make any sense. Almost everytime we clip a binner we would probably die if we didn't check whether it went on the right ring. It should be routine.
