i really wouldn't go any smaller than that unless you have a geeked out 346.

Copy that! I have 5 fully woods ported 3 cube saws. The latest and best is my Slingerized 50 cc 346NE, which is 54% faster than stock, which prolly translates to about 5.5 horsepower!1 Guaranteed to be the best crane saw for cuts under about 22 inches.....I run it with an 18 " bar, but it would pull 24" with aplomb...
Then there's my ported fleet of 372's, the fastest of which is almost a race saw, and will obliterate any stock 390 or 660 in the known universe.
Stock is for the birds.
As far as running a climb saw on crane removals, why not use the properly sized tool for the job at hand? And that would be a saw like my muffler modded 2139T Jonsy which will humble a stock 20 yr outdated 260 Stihl ....for any pick under 14-16" anyhow.
