Tie into tree,Tie into crane? That is the question

Re: Tie into tree,Tie into crane? That is the ques

[ QUOTE ]
Xman, do you climb with your saw, or do you hang it where you will make the cut? So sling your first piece, cut it. Then hang your saw and run up and sling the second piece, then just burn down to your second cut, grab your saw and cut it off? I have done this method before multiple times. It is good!!

[/ QUOTE ]

If it's the 200T I just keep it on my side and don't really notice it.

If it's a 441 or greater, I might hang it up as you say, and come back to it. Heck, the crane might send it up to me on the second pick if the first pick was done with a 200T and the second required a bigger saw. The heat this summer seems to be cramping up my arms hauling up big saws on a rope.

In 23 years of crane work, I've stayed tied to the crane 3 times. All 3 times, the tree was compromised and I didn't think it was safe to be tied into the tree. As soon as the piece was severed, I descended. It's a rare situation indeed.

As far as riding the ball to set the sling, like Allmark said, whatever is the safest method.

Re: Tie into tree,Tie into crane? That is the ques

Thank you Norm. You were one i was hoping would reply to this post. I know you have lots of crane experience, and really appreciate the insight.

That is how I was taught in the past, tie into tree everytime, unless tree is unsafe.

royce, i was going to send you a pm but i'll just put it out there.

no offense normie.

the guy sitting in the national 1500 at the new company you work at has forgetten more crane removal tree work than norm and anyone else you feel the need to ask a question too.

man up and go talk to doug before you bring questions out here. you say you want to climb forever well this is your chance. learn from the guy and blindly do as he says because his chit does in fact not have an odor.

no one here on this site has the experience that you now have right in front of you. consider yourself very very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with the man.

also. as a man. there are certain things you don't talk about in an open forum. f ucking with your bread and butter is one of them.

stay safe.

thats why I said don't make me come up there and put you all in your place. You say #3 crew, in 3 months time it'd be the #1 crew and we'd run the show.

Just messing you know, but, I'll say I've never takken a full time job where some how I did not wind up as the top climber in 3-4 months.

Aspen tree service excluded, didn't work there long enough right Mark

Re: Tie into tree,Tie into crane? That is the ques

come on up man.

we run 2 crane crews. you can be the stud on the B crew. (you don't want any part of C crew)

for real though if you as stud as you think you is then you should for sure think about a move up this way.

i love competition. i'd be psyched to have another climber around to talk chit with.

you not a has been are you? how old are you?

Re: Tie into tree,Tie into crane? That is the ques

btw. i gotta question the manhood of anyone who uses a tophandle on a crane assisted takedown.

I use a top handle in the tree but use a 3120 up there just as regularly. Does that make me less of a man than you? Please explain how that works

Okay, I'll take the bait too...

I see it as the "right tool for the right job." Meaning, when your cutting into smaller wood (less than or slightly greater than 14") we may as well save energy and carry a smaller saw.

And the principle can get incrementally larger as the wood gets larger incrementally, rigtht?

You should see my little 150lb frame with an 088 & 41" bar attached to my harness.
smirk.gif

You should see me lift it chest height to horizontally make a cut.

All the ladies come out of their homes to watch, because they say I'm such a better man after I put down the top handled saw. I even see the men watching me run into their homes because they see me man handle that 088 with such gusto!
applaudit.gif

Stephan, how's my satire?
grin.gif

And for the sake of the conversation... I'll tie into both the crane and the tree.

I've got to agree. Doug is an amazing operator, thank your lucky friggin' guardian angel that you have a chance to work with him.

I don't do crane work personally, but I contract tree removal companies who do cranework all the time. The way your company and oldirtys companies do it is much faster and as safe as possible (considering its treework!)

Holly, the only reason you would become number one is cause you chase off all the level headed help (dont know many that would put up with you
smirk.gif
). You can be a jerk. But I would love to go and "play" for a day. Mainly cause if you speak that highly of yourself you gotta have some kind of knowledge. I think it would be fun.

Anyway back on topic... I tie into the tree whenever the crane is loaded. And always have a 346xp (or larger) on my side. ever thought about carrying extra slings so that you when you climbed to the next sling point you could have the set before the crane got back. I know whenever I get the crane out, the spot is so tight I cant just "lay" the piece down. and it takes a few for the ground crew to get it down.

Re: Tie into tree,Tie into crane? That is the ques

the use of a top handle just doesn't make any sense to me. are you up there to dillydally or get the job done?

why not just bring up a saw with a 24inch bar and be able to make 99% of your cuts?

in fact i highly recommend a full wrap saw. that 24in will be able to make almost every butt cutt too unless you happen to be doing a big donkey. and even then start the cut with that saw so that way you dont have to worry about dulling the big chain on the crap you usually find in the first few inches of a butt cut.

its really simple. not calling any of you queer for using a top handle but how smart is it to be tying up groundmen and wasting time when 1 saw is all you need.

c'mon.

I don't care how big the crane is you normally use. Isn't there some jobs where the crane is maxed out on length and flattened out to almost horizontal and all the pick it can handle is like 1500 lbs? What are you doing carrying a 24" bar when the diameter of the cut you are taking is like 10 inches?

Big giant crane, taking one to three cuts to do a whole tree nearby, = very little skill needed, = big deal, = no reason to brag. Well.... unless you own the crane I guess.
