Two different ways to retrieve.
the working end of the climber's rope is on the left in the pic. the rope needs to have a splice or some sort of bulge [tape works ok] to catch in the long, skinny shackle. The rope is pulled up. through the big ring and it slithers out of the pulley too. then the rope is pulled out of the tree with the RG dangling from the end. This method can allos the RG to snag onthe way down or smash on the ground. Your choice if you do this.
The other method is with a throwline. Mark Bridge taught me the way he retrieves the RG. AFter tieing in, attach a trowline to the big ring and toss the line laterally through a neighboring tree. Let the throwline go to the ground. When its time to retrieve, pull the rope out. This time, the throwline will keep the RG from falling out of the tree, lower with the throwline.
Using the throwline means that there is another line in the tree to get snaggled. Part of the hassle, I feel the RG makes climbing easier so it's worth this little inconvenience.
