This tree is suffering the affects of the recent super cold (for LA...down to about freezing in some places) temps we've been having.

My guess is: Betulaceae Family

Alnus rhombifolia-- White alder

Dont you love LA nick? If you ever get a chance, go to the science library at Pomona College out in claremont. They have a tree tour map that you can walk around the campus and take in some pretty cool trees. After that you can go up the street to Rancho Santa anna botanical gardens which specializes in California Native plants. Not so many trees but a lot of crazy plants.
I would agree with tree rat that that looks like an alder.

Sure looks like Alder to me too. its weird seeing as none of them up here will have any leaves on them for another month or two at the least.
