This is the Akimbo

No.. Lower bollard sheeve retaining flare.
And I totally understand needing to draw the line somewhere with the could do this or thats..
I am really happy, and kicked my self in the ass for stalling too long on the gofund me..
10-4 on the retaining flare. That was another design compromise. Go with an off the shelf bushing or have a custom length one made at higher cost (the next size shorter for off the shelf is too short). The flare is the same on the gofundme units btw. Keep up the feedback, I’m so relieved you guys are finally getting them into your hands (and you don’t immediately hate it ) :D

If I were to run it that way I’d have the wrench on the biner and not the tending hole. It was more of a smart assed jab, but it really is something to try.

So day one thoughts are it’s fucken awesome. It worked great for the first half of the climb, then it became jerky. This could be because my rope started getting moist, or the tail weight changed the friction? Granted I could have had it snug, wasn’t exactly a low and slow job, but wasn’t a 100’ climb either
This stands to reason, that using the RW with the Akmbo, might enable the Akimbo to be used on smaller diameter climbing lines. I just might have to test this theory, since many of the approved ropes are out of stock and/or unavailable.

I wouldn't think you have to worry if the ropes are approved. Use whatever you currently use and see if it performs well.

See if it holds you, climb up, check if it holds a few times, try a short descent, see if it holds, if it does consistently, try a long fast descent and see if the heat causes it to start slipping.

That should test your rope's suitability and your akimbo adjustments

...but I've never even seen one

Just to be clear I never even used it in that configuration. It was more of a jab at the instructions and the tending hole not being for life support.
Now if one were to slap a wrench on it I’d just place it on the main carabiner.

We've all seen the pictures of the Wrench siitting on top of just about every device out there, and I even saw a photo of a Wrench over a hitch-hiker recently. With some tweaking of the settings I imagine the Wrench/ Akimbo might work really well for some. Who knows? A real testament to the simple genius of the wrench. Thanks Mr. TreeBing!

I've seen (and heard glowing reviews for) the wrench above the Taz Lov2

Question that perhaps @JMerritt can answer. The Akimbo is designed for ropes 11.5-13mm according to the device, but the 11.1mm Fly is on the list of "approved" ropes. Any particular reason for this or to think another 11mm line won't work as well? I ask because I'm looking to get a new rope and would need something from the plus-sized list, but still prefer the smaller diameters.

EDIT: Also, anyone flown the Akimbo on Fly and have any opinions on it.

I just put a caliper on my moderately used hank of Fly in excellent condition, ta-da... 13mm.

For a variety of reasons manufacturer stated rope diameters vary in reality. And many of you folks know that ropes magically gain diameter with use (fiber fuzz etc.)

And to continue this fun game, just measured diameter on the following lines:

Well used Yale Aztec, excellent condition: 13mm
Moderately used Tachyon, excellent condition: 13mm
Very well used Tachyon in good condition: 15mm
Very well used Sterling HTP "10mm" in good condition: 11mm

It's no wonder that my older Tachyon, now a 15mm is a bit of a pain limbwalking on a Rope Wrench, 15mm tends to bind up in the wrench if my full weight is not on the system (as in on a limbwalk).

Lots of answers below, basically nailed it. Fly does not actually measure 11.1. In addition, it’s inclu on the approved rope list is based on actual testing and not on its stated diameter.
