Let me preface this by saying I haven't actually said these works to Matt so I guess this is kinda a dick post but here it goes. First I'll say the Valiant is a great saddle. To me, it's a tribute or the old school climbers and the types of gear they used. I no longer use it and I'll explain why.
If you've been around a while and know me, Matt took a lot of crap some time back re: a post he made discussing his beliefs on women ect. That post brought him quite a big of bad media. Cancel culture kicked in hard. People were cutting up their MCRS saddles in effigy. Treestuff, trying to save face, (namely Bonner) decided to sell Matt out and leave all the MCRS owners out in the cold. They discontinued the saddle and cut ties with Matt. I personally spent a lot of energy defending the MCRS and trying to make people see how they could separate the gear from the man who made comments they didn't like. I went round and round with Bonner and it got pretty ugly. It ultimately lead to my decision to never ever again do business with Sherrill or Treestuff. It wasn't the only reason, just the breaking point. Again, the amount of energy I expended sticking up for the MCRS when all the kids were cancel culturing Matt was pretty significant.
Thats the back story. Here's the currents. I heard through the grapevine about the Valiant. Not directly, just word of mouth. Not that he owes me anything but based on the amount of shit I took, I think I coulda maybe been in the fold. I called Matt and told him I was pretty put off by not being included in the roll out and told him why. I later found out he had given at least 4 sets of valiant pads to some popular social media folks, not gonna mention their names, but they are the independent comp crowd. Unfortunately the same people who actually cancelled him previously. Having know Matt to be an independent, stand by your morals and principals kinda guy, I found this to be sort of a major compromise what I thought he stood for. Saw the money and popularity to be more important than it had been in the past. I see these guys who got the Valiant for free. I have never ever seen a single one of them climb on their free saddle. Not once. No feed back, no promoting Matt's product, nothing. To Matt's credit, he did sell me a set of pads at cost because I was a little offended. I didn't want one for free, I just didn't think giving away his stuff to people literally kicking the shit out of him was a honorable thing to do. Because those of us standing up for his product as people were literally cutting them up and burning them should count for something.
Second reason, if you know me, you know I have been a huge supporter of Richard Mumford and especially during the Weaver crap. I contributed to his defense, I denounced Weaver and continue to boycott them. I asked Matt numerous times who made the pads. He wouldn't tell me. I told him if it was Weaver I couldn't support his product due to my issues with them. He continued to tell me they are his pads he had manufactured. Knowing my strong beliefs about the boycott, I believed he wouldn't sell me something he knew I was fundamentally against. I found out, from a reliable source, the pads are in fact Weaver. As soon as I found out, I mailed Richard a check for the amount I paid Matt. I will not be a hypocrite. Had I known, I never would have bought them. I've owned 3 MCRS, 2 I bought and one Rico gave me. I also own a Valiant, so its not his product I dislike. Its a questions of ethics for me.
I acquired a CAMP harness. I was told why I got that harness and it seemed genuine. I believe in CAMP. I support Jack Perry! I support my very dear friend Dave Stice! I will be a positive voice for CAMP, not because they bought me, but because I believe in their product and I believe in the people I dealt with. At the time, this was the same reason I stood up for the MCRS during the great cancelling. I no longer feel that way and just cant get back onboard with the mission. A few people out there have know this about me for a couple years. This is the first time I've publicly spoken about it.
Look, the Valiant is a brilliant concept and honors those who paved the path for us. The pads are real quality. I can't say anything bad about the product. Again, it's a me thing. It's purely principals. May seem silly to some but I am entitled to pick and choose where and how I spend my money and who I support for any reason I choose. My choice and this is the choice I made. Just mine.
If you're interested in one, buy one, hope you love it as much as I loved mine because I really did.
Sorry you asked yet?
