Sean, I did cut from the side, just because it was easier to balance my weight. At the time I didn't realize I butchered the notch. My decision to use the adjacent tree, (and don't laugh too loud) was the tree was so tall and skinny I was worried about being slung around by the whipping action. I haven't tried the afc, but have one in my bag I had made from some webbing and alum rings. Also carry something similar with a pulley Instead of rings. I like to use that in larger trees when its better to climb to the top and come back down to work up. Most small and medium size pines I just limb my way up and top and block down.
