Tendonitis

Went to doc today and got a cortisone shot for pain I've had for a while, in my inside elbow (golfers elbow?). I did some therapy for a little bit, but didnt really help. Anybody else had this problem?

It's called medial epicondylitis....lateral epicondylitis is tennis elbow.

I've done a bit of reading on them. Often useful is deep friction massage followed by ice and proper exercise (strengthening and stretching)...all done in proper sequence and over a period of time.

Dr. James Cyriax was instrumental in making this system popular.

I've got that right now. Sounds like it at least. On the insides of the forearms. Feels like the bone there is bruised. When strained I can really feel the soft tissue damage. I've had this for several months. It sucks. I'm going to see a orthopedist (sp?) next Thursday.

Stop using a split tail if thats how your climbing. Be careful dragging brush, self massage the affected area a lot. Use a chipper with autofeed, all of these eliminated my tendonitis.

NoBivy's right...work smart to protect that area. That area that feels sore is the condyle where the tendons attach. Sounds like they have been strained and didn't heal properly.

Often, if tendons aren't allowed to heal and rehabbed properly they get "gnarly"...healed tendon should be smooth and flowing...when the healing produces small knots of tissue they are subject to microtears when you use that area again...and that soreness you feel.

Use ice, deep friction self massage and proper stretching and strengthening. The new "ground substance" (new tissue for healing the area) must be modeled/stressed properly so that it forms good, viable tendon.

Seeing you orthopod is a smart thing to do. I suspect he may point you to his physical therapist. Try to follow their program and you can probably lick it.

Keep finding ways to work smart..good luck, let us know how it shakes out for you.

Mine lasted three years! Stopped mtn. biking for a bit, but primarily changed the way I climbed. Increased chipper size(winch too) and that was that. Now on to the other long list of ailments ive' got. weight gain, gray hair, arthritis, lack of time, responsibilty, dang I'm screwed!

No split tail? What go back to tying a bowline with a long tail to tie a Blakes? No thanks.

My batch of tendonitis has arisen since we got a 1590 with winch and a Boxer. Go figure.

Well two days after the cortisone shot and no pain! I have an anti-imflamatory I'm taking also, and icing alot. Hope it is good for awhile!
I am kind of wondering if my pain is related to smaller diameter climb line. Another thing though, is that we do alot of fine pruning and structure work here, so lots of handsawing.

TreeW, good deal on the no pain. Cortisone is noted for making the pain go away...but be careful..the injury is still there. Just because you feel better don't go back "whole hog" too quickly.

You probably still need proper rehab to make it pain-free permanently.

Can you transfer some of the sawing and repetetive motion to the other hand for awhile...or once in awhile?

No split tail, no bowline either. I use a closed VT system mucho bettero! Try it you'll like it if your using a split tail. It's autofeed for your hitch! Grip strength training might help for running your boxer.

I also had a pretty severe bout of this. Acupuncture also helped me through it. Also I had to seriously look at how I was doing certain repetitive tasks at work such as chain saw use and the way I would ascend ropes. By altering my techniques and trying to move my body closer to my work I am able to function well in my 42 year old body after 27 years of tree work. I think one key for me is that Winter slows way down for me work wise. That gives my body a chance to heal up.

I use a knut currently. I think we're talking about the same basic concept of climbing system. Only difference being you use a VT. Is this correct?

I haven't used a Blake's in years. Too barbaric.

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

Sorry, been on the road working and living in hotel rooms, no computer access.
Anyways, right arm after cortisone shot feels fine. Now my left arm is starting show same pain. Been using a elbow brace-definately helps!!

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

All excellent info on tendonitis...work smart, massage, accupuncture, antiinflammatories, rest, physical therapy, don't do things that make it hurt. I had it and these things worked together to resolve it.
