Tendonitis

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

I'm still dealing with my "golfer's elbow." I think our cold weather isn't helping, but I've been trying to stretch the forearms and do lots of wrist curls with low weight and high repetitions to strengthen the muscles/tendons in that area. It seems to be helping, but not eliminating the problem yet.

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

It seems to be working actually. I think the warmer weather is a factor too.

I'm continuing to stretch throughout the day and doing the curls with 15-20lbs to strenghten my forearms. I really pay attention to if something hurts. If it does, I don't do it! A couple months ago I couldn't do dumb-bell curls with my palms up, but I can do these in the mornings now. It hurts a bit in the afternoons after work. I'm still staying away from pull-ups for now, but footlocking and climbing in general isn't a problem anymore.

I also started using a 4/1 VT and a friction saver pretty religiously, and that combo has reduced a lot of stress.

At this point our work season is really kicking in, and rest isn't an option.

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

Yeah, shot has worn off, but that right is arm doing well! Its the left thats giving me problems though, in the same spot. The inside of the elbow, the doctor called it golfers elbow. I have been taking perscription anti imflamatory for it, and that really helps. Just makes me nervous that I will become dependent on that for no pain.
I have been doing push ups and some wrist curls, have noticed my arms getting stronger. But tendonitis still seems to get inflamed with alot of climbing and pruning- ie. handsaw use.
Stay away from the pull-ups, doctor said bad news for arm and wrist probablems!

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

The doctor I went to prescribed anti-inflamatorys which eliminated the pain and I guess inflamation, but so did regular old Ibuprofen. She also suggested icing (for inflamation), continuing the massage therapy I was already doing, and Physical Therapy. The she gave me an arm brace which was just a strap of elastic with some velcro ($20!) and told me to wear it 23 hours a day.

I took some of the pills, wore the brace for awhile, threw away the note for the PT, and cancelled my follow up appointment.

The brace and the drugs probably helped a bit. Massages, icing, stretching, and strengthening are fixing me though. I'll try accupuncture if it comes back.

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

Hello,

Wow, I did not realize this was such a problem among arborists. I have got it on the bone inside of my left elbow. Very tender right now. Sounds like a lot of good advice which I will try. The elbow brace does not seem to help much for me. Like you said KySawyer, the season is kicking in. :) BTW, it was good to meet you at Vermeer last month. Hope everyones elbows are better. Later.

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

Total body stretching or even better yoga seems like the best or only cure for tennis elbow. I think it seems to be related to mental stress as well. Just like a tree's health or an ecosystem's all things are connected. Remember my advice is free and sometimes that is all its worth.

I definitely didn't help just on its own. Maybe it was just those prescription anti-inflamatories that did the trick.

Recently I've been climbing with a friction saver all the time and continually searching for a friction hitch that breaks, advances, and grabs easily. Trying to reduce that arm stress. I'm noticing the pain less and less, so maybe I'm recovering.

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

A few years back, I had tendonitis in both wrists. The doctor gave me some arm/wrist support casts that laced up and went up to the elbow. He told me to sleep in them every night for two months. I did this and took over-the-counter pain relievers and I have not a problem with my wrists since. Now I realize that I probably have tennis elbow, would the same thing work to help this problem? Has anyone here had luck with the brace over a decent amount of time? KYSawyer & DMills, I noticed that you have worn the brace but have you worn it for a decent amount of time?

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

I wore the brace for 2-3 weeks. The doctor told me to wear it 23hrs a day, but I probably actually did it for 15-18. Maybe not even that much.

The "constant" preasure from the brace was supposed to cause the muscle/tendon to create a new attachment point to the bone. I never went for my follow up appointment, so I can't say if this really happened or not.

Re: Still got Tendonitis?

If you had someone look at tendonitis can they see whats going on with a standard x-ray or do you need a MRI done?
My elbow has been feeling quite better, even after alot of heavy climbing, pulled a ten and half hour day yesterday (three maples and a large cottonwood!!).
Although, the little pain I have is right at the small bone on the inside of my elbow. Being right at the bone makes me nervous about the attachment.
