telluride road trip

Yup, skew.....8 summits, 4 require a 2-20 minute hike to, all patrolled, 7 have steep north faces, 35-55 degrees.....at least 40 chutes or lines of 38 degrees or more, some hold their pitch for a good long ways.....and then some nice long runs like Exterminator, Right and Left Angle that are 28-35 degrees for 2000 vertical, gladed, some open, some well treed.
Same or more percentage of steep as Snowbird and Taos, which means more than anyplace, % wise. Sure, CB, Jackson, Big Sky, Squaw have lots of gnar, but the 3 I mentioned I think have the most %.

50 miles from Seattle lies
Alpental...which is even more gnar. www.alpental.com

Of course, I've neglected Silverrton...gotta get down that way!! Has to be the best....though its mostly guided only, it seems....and they do farm the terrain.

I 've skiied there about 6 or 8 times now. They have unguided now until first week in January I think. They have had thier own avi issues this year with several burials- no fatalities. By farm it what do you mean?
My buddy that patrols there said they had one slide that was 300 yards wide with an 8' crown!
We are under an avalanch warning right now. It is gonna be a while before this snow settles now and there is more on the way.

Lot of early snow in Co, eh!

That's a big slide even for Silverton. 8 ft crown this year??

I watched this week's Utah report by Bruce Tremper. Nasty crust with sugary crystals above. Very high hazard there.

Farming is where the guides limit where everyone skis, to save slopes for later.

I have reached a conclusion!........ i do not like either of you guys!!

OK this is getting a little silly- It has been snowing steadily for what 3 days now . They are saying we might get 40" out of this pulse. Skied Purgatory today- snorkel conditions. All snow shoveling chores are put on back burner but are now piling up huge!

Heard Silverton was nipple deep yesterday.

I skied today in 18" of nice light snow....at 3000' elevation. Alpental opens tomorrow, but the top, super expert chair is on hold. Then, 3+ feet is due in starting Fri evening, with warming. Avy conditions will go to High.....bummer if the chair doesn't spin.

Another inbounds avy death today, at Squaw....

bad, very bad

Two weeks ago, there was no snow...Now look at this cool gnarled, bent over tree......

base area is below.

I only skiied for 2.5 hours, till it got tracked out...it was 2-2.5 feet deep, and a bit denser than yesterday, but still super nice and plenty light.

Warming with the current storm may mean rain on the snowpack...that's one of the problems we deal with in the PNWet.....but we may luck out...3 feet could fall.

I wish I had a medium-sized bag full of hundred dollar bills so that I could take a bunch of time and just go skiing...

almost 40" in Madison this December... a bunch got wiped out last weekend by rain. Now there's some awesome, crusty ice! I love Wiscompton.
