Super classic pain in the ass.

Any updates on the Super Classic Foot Ascender? Has the spring tightness issue been addressed? I'm a Pantin Classic devotee and I'd be really happy to know that the Super Classic meets the challenge and equals the functionality of the original Pantin.

Still pretty much useless in my desired DRT ascent setup. For now I've adopted SRT for ascent and then switching over to DRT once I get up there.

It really is easy bro , short strides like your peddling backwards

Thanks for this post, Crazy_Jimmy. I know this is a fairly old thread, and I'm still working my way through it from the beginning, so apologies if my post seems out of sequence with the current state of the thread.

I just wanted to thank you for this description of how to think about the use of a combination of foot ascender and knee ascender. It is the first time I've ever read it described like "peddling backwards". Really interesting description, and I look forward to keeping it in mind the next time I have a chance to climb.

Thanks again.

@moss, What was it about the CT that you did not care for, if you don't mind my asking?

Tim

I don't like the locking feature and the way the straps connect to the thin riveted frame instead of the meat of the ascender body. It's been discussed endlessly but the old Pantin comes off the rope for specific reasons, ie: when the tail of the rope is re-directed or angled forward. When the rope is forward like that simply use the back of your free foot to redirect it back to vertical and climb kick-out free. The easy kick-out is huge when you want it off the rope no-hands with a simple foot motion. With a little practice you can reinstall the old Pantin on the rope without using your hands. Anyway, I like it. I understand why others don't. Which reminds me, I need to put my CT in a vice and grind the safety off ;-)

Me too! Sorry guys,.. if ever I chip in on a topic from 2008!!

It finally happened, I've lost my old style left foot pantin. Suddenly in the market for an ascender for my power leg, and I want so badly for the super classic to be the one. What's the word here? Anybody have something good to say on it?
The guy at treestuff was nice and helpful but couldn't offer me what I was really looking for--advice based on first hand experience.
Otherwise I'm gettin new pantin and hope I don't end up like jake Riggs and his (bust up)

super Classic spring is super tight. If your ascending SRT with weight on your line you won't notice anything but withou weight below you for the first 10-15 feet you will be sitting back to pull slack through by hand.

I find I'm doing that w/ the CT...

@moss chainsaw works well.. And then you can haul it up when you hit the work zone. Also, a coil that's "locked off" with a daisy chain (If that makes sense) works pretty well, and can be uncoiled remotely.

I understand KK - KiwiKlimbers.com aka Dale Thomas was debuting a new foot ascender in Austin at the ITCC. I haven't heard anything more, but I know he was cooking up something good. Might be worth keeping an eye out for this.

So this thing is officially TERRIBLE on all fronts, having played around with a few other foot ascenders at JAMBO and the NATCC I can say this ascender is no good. Do not buy. The spring is still way too tight and now a couple of the teeth on the gear have somehow bent up the wrong way, one broke off inside my rope and the other ripped a bunch of strands on my new rope.
