stump grinders

See attachment to figure out what I'm saying.

The only thing I don't like about my 1626 Super Jr. (which isn't that bad) is that the cutter wheel is small. The distance between the belt guard and the longest tooth are about 5" or so. So, when you are grinding deeper and you need to swing all the way right, you are restricted.--The belt guard hits the ground.

What it means is this: You nave to grind more on the right side to compensate for the belt guard. I'd rather not grind more than necessary.

So, I suspect (because this is the only machine I've owned) that a larger cutter wheel prevents this from happening.

I have both small and large wheels so that is correct. With the big machine it will still happen to some extent.

Yes it will, just take off the outside wheels.

I have both small and large too. An advantage of a smaller wheel is you can more easily grind around rocks...grind around a stubborn rock until it is not well anchored by the surrounding wood, then it can be flicked out with the teeth or dug out. Not feasible with a large wheel.

I have had 3 machines with deutz motors with very poor performance long term.

I had always heard good about Deutz from the logger guys(skidders) but just shows that different applications can be different results! How did the tracked rig you fabbed up work out?It looked pretty neat to me!For a little machine all I have is a wheeled Vermeer 252 I bought used from Biers about 10 years ago, converted it to 4 wheels and it stopped tipping over.It still cuts stumps but I'm sure not as fast as a new unit but it has been long paid for.

BIERS huh, I bought our 1890 bandit from those guys. They are only abought 10 miles from me. I run a rayco tow behind with a 70hp duetz and its a great machine if the terrain permits you to access it. If not I also have a smaller carlton self propeled that is worth its weight in gold for tight quarters and minimal impact on terrain.
