Stopping Tree Hackers in thier tracks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJsyTX31S0Y&feature=related

this is pretty much exactly what is going on here in Hawaii and specifically my island Maui. what are some good steps to stop these guys in their tracks.

i try to tell everyone(not talk their head of of course)about why it is important to hire a certified ISA arborist and why topping tree's is a bad thing and only an ISA certified arborist will be able to service every tree need. not just pruning with a chainsaw but fertilizing, addressing girdled roots, pests, disease, proper installation and irrigation. we need to work harder to inform the public on these things and stop these cowboys from doing what they are doing. i know they need to make a living but honestly it is taking credit away from the real tree specialists. ask yourself this, would you pay a guy calling himself a dentist to work on your teeth if he has no credible license, has not been through medical school and is only a couple hundred $$$ cheaper???? THERE IS NO WAY THAT GUY WOULD EVER GET NEAR MY TEETH.

What could possibly go wrong....

Think of all the coca-cola you could buy with the money you save on cheap dental work.

Seriously though, does you area require local council permits to prune & remove trees?

It doesn't completly stop it, but the right system managed wee goes a long way to help reduce it.

He was banned/kicked out. Ekka was a fun guy.

But, yeah. The sub-standard work I see here gets my blood boiling too.

I think, if some of these guys were willing to get trained, they could do some nice work. But, I sort of think their pride gets in the way.

But, then there are guys who are simply thieves and hackers.

Remember folks; I'm Not-A-Hacker!

Well.............you ought to be able to sell tree work without having to include lies in your sales pitch!

thats what alot of the guys here do. they scare the home owner into removing the tree. i once did a pruning bid for a eucalyptus. the cowboys gave thier bid the day before i got there and told the homeowner the tree has too many branches and is top heavy and there is a major risk of it falling over due to the crown being heavy. (NO SHITE SHERLOCK) tree's are heavy in the crown!! luckly i got to do a pre job inspection climb and take a good look at the tree. there was no signs of it leaning from weight or being stressed from wind, in fact it is one of the nicer eucs i have seen here on maui. all that needed to be done was alot of dead wood removal and a few branches needing some EWR. total cost with hauling and chipping. $300 and took 4 hours. the cow boys were bidding $550 for what i did and $800 for the removal. i woulda only charged $600 for the removal including stump grinding and clean up. the next week i saw the same crew down the street topping a grevillia robusta(sliky oak. guy had no face protection, no hard hat, no fall protection and was spiking the whole time wearing tennis shoes.

Do you have local council regulations around tree pruning & removal?

Doesn't solve everything, but a good system can help reduce it.

How does one go about getting local government to push legislation forward that would enforce regulations for tree work? Is this something the Arizona Community tree council should be working on instead of quarlling over what council member makes what and how they will get more members? I myself have never been to a AZTC board meeting so its really all a mystery to me.
Seems like these would be the people to get that started though.

Josh Im with you, let me know when you head North.Im right behind ya. The hacks(FOR THE MOST PART) win here in AZ as far as Im concerned.
