Stitches removal

I've yet to feel any pain at the time of an incident with any injury I've had. That includes breaks, dislocations, cuts and a partial amputation of my middle finger.

totally lost track now,
have been collecting them since I was 6.
still have over 60 stainless steel suture clips internal abdomen and around normal sutures 80 external abdomen area.
say around two hundred ? all told from top of head to bottom of feet.
taking them out yourself isn't too bad as long as the skin or scab hasn't adhered to the stitch.
I once removed my own nasal gastric tube - now that was an experience.

Treehumper you don't feel pain cuz tree men are badmammajammas
My first set of stitches came from a hockey stick to the face, then a piece of glass while running the garbage truck at Jasper Park Lodge, next was my foot and wrist when I worked as a carpenter. So, I think it's more my dulled nerves than being a badmammajamma!

I think I'm at 40 ish. Most are closures of surgical wounds. Oh wait, nah, over 50. Forgot the stitches to reattach my finger.

Have you already told the story of how you managed to detach a finger, or at least a part of one? These scary stories are the kind I like to read in order to try to protect myself from a similar possible incident in the future, as well as to just inspire a healthy fear in me which promotes being really safety conscious at all times.

Thanks for any answers you choose to give.

I may have but don't remember....
It was just dumb. The day was not going well. Hot, we were working in a overgrown lot, everything snarled and just a pain. The crew wasn't working together and at times it seems at cross-purposes. I had just finished up in the tree, came down and jumped into the ground work instead of moving on to the next tree. There was a lot of brush to be chipped and it just wasn't getting done. I grabbed the winch hook and hit the lever to feed it out but instead it fed into the fair-lead. I felt it pinch my fingers and instantly reversed it and pulled my hand away. Now I was pissed at myself.

I stepped away from the chipper taking that little misstep as a sign that I shouldn't be there but should get back to the job of getting the trees down. As I walked away I thought I'd better check to see if I broke skin. I had gloves on and began pulling them off. As I slipped them off the tip of my middle finger just above the 1st knuckle flopped over making my finger look like a Pez dispenser. Now I was really pissed at myself.

I flipped it back in place, wrapped it up and jumped in the truck with one of the crew at the wheel. At the urgent care center the doctor "thought" he "might" be able to help. This after his nurse nearly fainted from the sight of my finger. We left.

At the emergency room a doctor came in, took a look and said it'll probably be amputated but he'd leave that decision to the orthopedic surgeon. In the mean time he'd stitch it on. The surgeon looked at and thought it looked pretty good and left it as is and made a follow up appt.

Needless to say, it wasn't a good situation. I did manage to switch to a hand specialist who then operated on it again to resolve some infection. After therapy and 3 mths recovering, I'm left with a mallet finger, numbness and odd pains. It really amazes me just how important that finger tip is to your overall grip and sensation.

Wow, @treehumper, thanks so much for being so open, honest and thorough in giving the details of this incident. I really appreciate it. These serious injuries can happen so quickly it's fairly breathtaking.

You are to be commended for keeping your cool in this situation, and handling it in such a businesslike manner. A whole lot of folks, probably myself included, would likely have instantly gone into shock upon seeing their hand in such a state. I'm practically fighting to maintain consciousness just from reading about it.

I know your finger will probably never be the same again, but I am wishing that it will eventually feel better.

Thanks again for your honesty.

Stitches, eh? No clue where I am as far as total count. Far in excess of 200, most assuredly. The largest number in one sitting would have to be from back in college, when I got hit by a Mercedes that ran a red light while I was rollerblading. Got the hood ornament driven into my hip and drug down my leg as I crumpled the hood and went into the windshield. All told, 157 stitches, about half internal. Happened at the corner the hospital was on, they probably could have run a gurney to me faster than it took for the ambulance to arrive.

157 in one sitting. Damn!! Mercedes, I guess if your gonna get hit by a car... Better than a ram hood ornament tearing ya open?

Thanks Tim, however the finger is as good as it's going to get. that happened back in 2012 prior to Sandy. I may very well have been in shock and that's why I didn't feel anything. Now though....:raro2:

Given the bumper and hood heights, not sure which one I'd rather be tagged by. Hood ornament on a Mercedes is just below hip level, on a Ram it's closer to my shoulder. Probably would've escaped quite so many stitches, but who knows the bruising or breaking that would've happened. Probably hit flat on a Ram and stay on the front, rather than going up the hood and into the windshield.

Take a look at car vs deer collisions. My wife and I nailed deer 3 days apart, less than a mile from each others accident. Totaled her Lincoln. Hit it head on, crunched and rolled up and over; bumper cracked in half and bent like a V, hood and radiator smushed in, both headlights busted, cracked the windshield. It was a mess. On the other hand, I caught a deer with the F250 and all I needed was a car wash. Bumper took all the impact.
