Stihl MS201

I tried to buy a new 200T this week - ALL GONE!

Anyone see one @ their local shop? I will buy it... Do me the favor - pick it up and ship it to me! I will make it worth your time - $50? take your wife to dinner on me.

Help! I am not ready for a 201.

p.s. - I called all Washington State and Southern California. No 200T

They are gonna give me a new 201T. It is outside the Stihl 7 day return but they'll do it anyway. They are also gonna fix mine and let me use it to see if the new carb fixes the rev problem. There was nothing in the handle that would make the saw rev up. They couldn't recreate the issue so they assumed it must be the carb. New saw on monday!

Glad they are standing by their products that is why I buy still. Good chaining with the new saw.

I am happy I got a new 200T just three weeks ago and I am all the way down here in Barbados. I am going to run this thing like mad hopefully all the kinks will be gone by the time I need a 201T. Paul.

Yes, not too worried. I would like just one more 200T before I switch over to a new model. Makes 'parts' easier as the oldest one dies.

Interesting - the 'modded 201' thread here on treebuzz. Looks good!

When I spoke with my (very good) local shop - he said he just got the 201's and would look into tweeking the power.

I had 3 0200s stolen last week, so I bought 2 201s (no 0200s available) and used them today and yesterday. Not trying to be inflammatory here but, so far, they are virtually junk. One runs better than the other and it is just so-so at best- kinda balky, not much power. It has about the power of a small Echo climbing saw.

The other one has VERY little power, as in GUTLESS, and has major hesitation 80% of the time when you hit the throttle. I've tried to richen the Low speed jet, no improvement yet. The saw takes like 2 minutes to warm up! Very lame. I've read some posts re how the 201 has more low speed torque than the 200. Having run the 201 now I see what they are talking about, but it's like good news/bad news: yeah it has more low speed torque but a 200 doesn't need low speed torque cuz it's got too much balls to slow it down in the first place.

Another outfit was working nearby today, I could here his 200 ripping it up, the sound alone made me envious. I'm actually having to change the way I work a little, cuz I'm using a saw that is 20 to 50% less of a saw than the 200s I am used to.

Perhaps through carb adjusting, breaking in, and patience, they will improve. But, if you can still find a new 200 for sale, do yourself a favor and invest in peace of mind, purchase a legend.

I hope it wasn't one of your own three stolen saws you where envious of.

The most disappointing thing about the 201 is the cold start. When the saw is off for more than five minutes you have to revv it again for half a minute to be able to make a decent first cut. The second most disappointing thing is the clutch.

The 201T (unfortunately?) needs a little tweeking to turn stock saw into good tool. Below is quote from ArboristSite, man who modded the 201T.

"Of course, everyone wants to know how it compares to a 200T. With a muffler mod only, they're dead even. With the timing advanced on the 201T, it was 20% faster than a muffler modded 200T! Would the 200T pick up another 20% with some timing advance? I don't know. That wasn't part of this test.

Once both the muffler was modded and the timing advanced, throttle response seems as snappy as a 200T, IMHO. "

Tried my first 201 today, I was actually impressed considering all the smack talk. It had a brand new chain with full rakers and actually cut a little faster than my 200 with razor sharp fine tuned chain. It has a funny sound though, kinda doggy sounding, not really a screamer but it still pulled through a 16" Aspen(very soft) without hesitation. Maybe it's the sound that has people second guessing. I think I'll be fine with the transition although I WILL miss the 200.

Ummm, hope this isn't a dumb question, but how does one "advance the timing" on a chainsaw?

The most disappointing thing about the 201 is all of it.

I've already commissioned a specialist engineer to build me a top handled saw derived from the Husky 346xp. It will be the world's first top handled saw specifically designed for tree removal. You heard it here first.

I've put about 4-5 hours on one the past two days on a couple big silver maples. Even after tuning out the boggy throttle response, they are a dog in the cut after you get past like 6-8" stuff. Wasn't horribly impressed.especially considering silvermaple cuts like wet toilet paper. Waiting to see how it is in sugar maple or pin oak. How about some dead elm ir locust even? Definitely a step down from the 200. Gets better "gas mileage " though!

I bought a 200t a few months back and my old one has been rebuilt at this stage. Looking forward to putting the new one on the shelf for a while and running the old one...until they get the 201t figured out. I am not impressed by the reports, but a few guys I know around here are.

The saw has been to the shop for two days again last week. Did it improve? I dunno.

This week I have been using my 192... The throttle lever of the 201 was frozen shut. Once the lever was pressed there was no turning back to idle. I opened the handle and I was able to remove a icy 'bushing' from the throttle lever 'axle'. Later that day again the same story and the next day again. The soap continues.

Did the shop visit improve the engine problems? For the few times I was able to use it in minus 10 to minus 18 celcius after de-icing the throttle? I really couldn't tell.
