Stihl MS201

What state do you live in? My friend is looking for one...
I had a guy pick my 200T up, then ship it to me.
I sent him$75 as a 'finders ' fee!

I love mine. Without any mods, it is just as fine as the 200. I have a MS200T NOS in box. They are bringing around $800. I'm going to keep it. I think people would be much happier with your MS201T if you ran a higher grade than pump gas. As incredible as the fuel efficiency of this saw is, look into SEF. How much gas do you use in a day in your top handle anyway? I found every time, that in my vehicles, I get 30 plus more miles out of a tank which justifies high grade pump fuel (and Lucas). It comes out in the wash in your 201T in performance and economy to run canned gas. Maybe five bucks extra per day not to fight it.

I had mine modified just recently....massive improvement, different saw altogether. Having said that, I just had a stock husky 540 demo saw for the day....absolutely annihilates the Stihl. The king is dead....

Yes, the 201 is good when modified.
I had Snelling in Ohio do mine. Muffler mod, ignition advance & unlimited adjusters.

My new complaint is the cheap AV mount on the lower handle.
Cheap little spring - I bent it in an Apple tree...

Reg - how good is that 540 and any word on WHEN WE CAN GET ONE?
I keep hearing the date gets pushed further back for us Neanderthal 's here in North America. Europe's got 'em...

I heard from a dealer here in Victoria that it'll be August....but thats just what I heard.

How good is it? well, I was going to make a vid of my modded 201t, just to reassure people that all is not lost at saying goodbye to the 200t....but upon having the 540 for a day I decided it would be pointless i.e. a stock 540 still beats a ported 201.

I mean, the stock 201 is still a stihl and good saw....but mainly for pruning and dismantling trees in small sections. Its not what you'd call a take-down saw because it responds and cuts way too slow to keep up with the pull of gravity on any kind of big top or limb....at which point it becomes plain dangerous. However, modifying makes a huge difference as you know.

Like I said, i only had the 540 for a day so I cant predict whether or not the wheels will fall off in a week....but i will say that the throttle response is unsurpassed, huge amount of torque i.e. it just sinks in, well balanced, nice anti-snag profile, very roomy round the handles for you fingers and a lot of other nice touches that you notice in the way its put together. Looks like the spark arrestor will pull out easy enough also, unlike the 201. To do the mods on this saw would be phenomenal....but is pretty dam impressive as is. Love Stihl to bits but the 540 by a mile.

Talked to a guy in marsh field Missouri that just bought one .First one I've heard of here on American soil and a lot pricier than the 200 I'm going to set if he will let me run it

Great news, Reg, hearing that you actually ran the 540.....

Hopefully, it will also be available as a Jonsered, like my 2139T, which is the same as the 338...as my guy in New York gets them for me for ~400, 50 less than the 338...

If it's that good, I'd spring for one, I guess...though I still have two good running 338/335/2139's, plus the old one...and I used my muffler modded 192 for the first time in quite a while...it's plenty fast for pruning or easy removals.

Love the way you describe the stock 201's shortcomings Reg.

A saw that can't cut fast enough to keep up with the pull of gravity can be downright dangerous in critical cutting situations!

Great to hear Husky has a good trimsaw out for sure.

If you guys haven't tried the canned 5 gallon ethanol free 98 octane premixed gas yet? You should. Almost like supercharging your saws, even low compression Husky's!

Seriously, my old 365 special came alive and screamed.

X2 jomoco. Reg did sum it up nicely.
It can be hard to explain why a powerful chainsaw is important in some situations.
"pull of gravity" & "downright dangerous" yep.
