Wire core lanyards
These climbing lanyards are spliced or crimped often under a shrink wrap finish. The shrink wrap is dark and makes inspecting the interior cable impossible. More than 1 lanyard fail has led to climbers falling from various heights. This is a gap in climbing safety inspections.

Climbing Lanyard Petition

This petition is to urge lanyard manufacturers to replace the dark solid rubber seals with a clear, transparent rubber seal that allows for visual inspection.

I dont see why manufacturers would have a problem with this. Is black shrink wrap much/if at all, cheaper than clear? Once they run out of stock of one they should be able to jump right into running clear

Not sure I'm starting with this then talking to distributers then manufacturers if you start at one end finish at the other it should not be a big problem

100% for clear shrink wrap. It would make me feel more comfortable, especially since we have to use steel core lanyards here in Hawaii when pruning coconut trees.

Agree that every piece of equipment should be inspectable, especially a known failure point such as this. In addition I would like to see manufacturer recomendations or ANSI standard (a shall not a should) as to length of service for any given piece. It could be as simple as 5 years for software and 10 year for hardware from the inservice date. Not that many of the lower grade tree slobs would listen, but those trying to be legit would/could have better guildance.
But in the mean time when in dought throw it out ! and Inspect inspect inspect!
