Static lines for footlocking and access lines

I am looking into getting a static line for footlocking and an srt access line. I have been considering HTP but I was hoping someone would have some feedback on this. It sounded like KMIII gets pretty stiff which I would assume making it more difficult to footlock so I am leaning away from that unless I hear otherwise. Some of the imports could be a possibility as well.

I would prefer something that will be multifunctional and obviously great for footlocking. Any help and advice would be great.

Use caution and read the specs of any line. Some static lines have little or no shock absorbing capacity...read stretch...which makes them a poor choice for climbing lines.

My preference in static lines is KMIII. The only time that I've found that it gets stiff is after two or more people descend on it from 90+ foot TIPs. Even then, it doesn't take long for it to retract and become flexible again. It doesn't turn into a stiff wire type rope either.

One thing that I've seen with HTP is that it is so stiff that it doesn't flake down into a very compact package. A more supple rope will flake smaller.

I think too often climbers hear about a stretchy rope and they go to a vision fo bungee rope. The difference in stretch between a lot of ropes is pretty insignificant until the TIP starts reaching 90'. Even then, as the climber moves up there is less rope above so less stretch in the system.

I agree with Tom, KM111 is a great rope, no memory and stays flexible, even after a long descent, once you start moving it into a bag, it flake in easily.

HTP is good rope. I use it for footlocking and ascent everytime. I have hit 15 sec footlocks on that rope all the time. It's all about preference. Not everyone is going to use the same rope or equipment.

Tom W, did you just bring that rope to Michigan for the comp? My buddy climbed on someones at the comp and that is what made us decide to get one. Thanks for the quick replies to everyone.

HTP gets stiff when it's been under tension but it's a non-issue for footlocking. In fact, it might help because it flips around less as you drop a lock and go for the next one.

I don't know what I would do without HTP. If low stretch is important, HTP will ruin you for anything else. Added bonuses are that it doesn't get wet and the very tight weave resists dirt and pitch.

I use 9mm for wilderness stuff where weight per foot is crucial, but overall I like 10mm best. It's easy to work with and works best with the widest variety of mechanical devices.

that time has nothing to with rope tom; that is because you are an animal of some kind...... hummm? maybe part chimpanzee; they are the most intelligent and aggressive.

yeah frank chipps did a 14:04 with velocity a few years back.Im actually using that as my access line to Jeff.I had to give my staticc line to a needy employee.

try using rocket line. it has the same feel of KMIII ...

I wouldn't ever say these two ropes feel the same. Rocketline is a lot looser, isn't it? and with a thicker cover strands but not as tight weave as KMIII?

I would say so Nick. Isn't Rocket a copy of Tachyon?

There is a new static line being released by NE Ropes this year that I have been working on for a couple of years now with Bill Shakespeare. Keep an eye out for it at the Expo. It has a blend of fibers in it to make it a bit different than any other rope. I will post info here soon. A bunch of climbers used it that were in my group that last two years at the ITCC.
