SRT system that still boycotts KONG(killers)

It sounds like most prefer the Robot over the F8 system. What other hardware are you guys/gals using that isn't a Kong product. I believe in the boycott, and want to explore other options. Rich showed a group of us his answer to the F8 at the OTCC, a large ring with a micro pulley. I didn't get a chance to feel it, and I am just popin' my cherry with SRT/work systems so I'm wanting to pick up where others have left off with this system. Is the Rope Wrench the only worthwhile option?

The SCARAB is the other alternative to the Robot. Its very similar. Onrope1.com sells it.

But neither the robot or the SCARAB will compare to the Rope Wrench in terms of functionality.

Yeah, the wrench has put the F8 system in the dark ages imo. Even though it came quickly on its heels. I thought the F8 was a good idea, the RW is just genius. And you can make a wrench cheaper than you can buy an 8. I have made 2 of them and they are both made from hickory hammer handles that I bought at Home Depot...like 5 bucks. One I spent a lot of time on drilling two seperate holes...yada yada yada. The one that works the best all I did was drill a 1/2 in hole at a slight diagonal angle for the rope to feed through and a smaller one for the tether, filed the edges dull and thats it. Cheapest piece of gear and the most innovative I've ever had...5 bucks! When the uni gets down to that maybe I will buy one.

Guys,
Please forgive my ignorance but can you explain the main purpose of the F8, Kong Robot and or the wrench. I watched two vids on youtube and they are using them with their VT and limb walking and so on but no good explaination on purpose. Thanks in advance

Look closely at the vids and you will see that the climbers are using these tools to climb and work the tree using SRT, aka, single rope technique. SRT has been around for ages but using it for any thing other than ascent or descent is rather new. The F8 and wrench and such are cheaper (and some may say at least as good) alternatives to expensive devices such as the unicender.

I should really add to what I just said by saying--the F8 and wrench and robot help manage friction that would otherwise make using just a friction hitch on a single line impossible.

OK so what your saying is it reduces the load generated on the friction hitch in a SRT mode to be more like the reduced load normally resulting in a closed loop system. Thanks because in none of the vids I viewed gave a clear explaination to "purpose" just how they set it up. Thank you again for your clarification highclimber30.

Has anyone used a brake bar on a carabiner like these? Perhaps 2 brake bars on one crab would be necessary (given how much room there might be in the carabiner) or a mini rappel rack with three bars. Does anyone know where to buy new brake bars for carabiners?

No prob scrat. These techniques are really cutting edge and quite fun...they've almost made climbing new to me again. They've at least opened up options in prunings and removals that aren't always there while climbing DdRT, but all of that has been discussed in detail elsewhere. treebing is the man to thank though. all of these things are pretty much his crazy little brain children. We are all waiting now for him to release his mid-line attachable RW to all of us restless treetards.
