SRT soft redirect

treebing

Been here much more than a while
Location
Detroit, Mi.
Been playing around with this new toy for the past couple of weeks and I actually really like it. This is thanks to an anonymous treebuzzer who sent me a small card last year with a small sample of a soft link. It is tied specifically with a diamand Knot. This soft link set up has passed all kinds of pull tests and drop tests to my understanding. I have been trying to figure out a good application for a soft link for a while and I finally realized it could possibly make a good redirect. The advantages is that it can be installed mid line, it is retrievable, It limits cambium damage to crotches, you do not have to un clip to install it to your line. It takes a bit of practice but it is a nice little addition to the tool box I think.

I think it is more important to have the leather protecting the frope and cordage itself. I think it is key that they rope not ever touch unprotected rope. I have found no signs of cambium damage as the rope does not saw back and forth on the limb as in a natural redirect on springy leads.

ooooo - perrrfect for spring pruning on the loose-barked trees

good show. I had been wondering about having something like that, but didn't know that it would be called a "soft redirect" until just now. the rope still slides thru the redirect, so you would still get some 2:1ish sort of forces on the redirect to think about. That's opposed to wrapping the whole limb with the rope and hanging from that.

thanks for sharing, kevin and anonymous. i like the retrievable aspect.

2:1?? It's still a 1:1, just a smoother action 1:1 compaired to being over bark. Good point about using on certin types of bark though. A whole lot more gental then a hard ring or pulley for sure!

oh you are right - that's my sunday night brain splurf for ya, Fairfield.

i meant doubling of forces. or 1.4ing of forces if it runs through the redirect or thru a crotch at that 90 degree angle. But the forces are different if the rope is wrapped around the limb and friction keeps the rope from sliding through the redirect like it was a pulley.

dang, I can't quite explain how, i'm not very good about talking about forces apparently.

Hey, Kevin, what's the material you use for that black stiffener(?) inside the leather sleeve?

Only thing Im not clear on is how is it midline attachable? If Im seein it right, you still have to thread the entire tail of your climb line through it then unclip your main biner and move it past then reclip.

I see how it is retrievable, and I dig it, but someone please clue me in to the midline attaching.

Couldnt you just hollow braid splice the amsteel into a "crossed loop" of sorts and do away with the big knot altogether? Again, if Im missing something please clue me in.

Just google "soft shackle" the midline attachable concept should become quite clear. Soft shackles have been used by mariners for a long time. They are really easy to make. It's a cool application of the concept, Kevin ... kudos.

Its pretty weird and it confuses me every time I install it but I am getting better at it. I don't have the retrieval tether on it in the picture but a mini keychain biner to catch a splice or knot will pull it out. Or you can use the rope trick to retieve it. You can do the same thing with two biners and a sling but biners are a pain getting through crotches.
