SRT Climbing video?

Could someone tell me what equipment this guy is using to climb the rope like this?

SRT Climbing video

I use SRT, but my system is very basic two Petzl ascenders(right and left hand ones) and 3 slings. My lower ascender is just used as a foot hold via a sling. Although I am connected to it by a 2nd sling as a backup.

After seeing this video I think I need an update.

I have some very tall conifers to climb in a couple of weeks, it would be good to try a new system.

I have no clue...

It looks very similar to a Frog Walker system using a double handled upper ascender. His chest is so far back away from the rope I would be very surprised if he's using a chest ascender though.

Do you have a photograph of a 'Frog Walker' system?

I also thought he was using some kind of double handed ascender. Also noticed his chest back from the rope.

It's his feet that are confusing me, I don't think he is using the Petzl foot attachment ascender. He is using both his legs for ascending.

Looks like they are in loops/slings of somekind.

It looks very efficient.

Ok, after watching the start of the video over and over I noticed when he ascends the hand ascender his left foot goes up.

So maybe there is a long sling attached to the hand ascender which goes down to his left foot.

When he moves the hand ascender up the rope it moves the left foot into position for the next step?

He has a petzl foot ascender on his right foot, maybe?
Is that Petzl foot ascender right footed only?

That video was posted and discussed here on TBzz:

yep...thats me in the video...thanks for reposting the link. i have slightly changed it so i no longer have to have someone hold the rope to keep it taught and the VT moves up as i push the hand ascenders up so it is at work hight instead of slacked down below my waist from not getting wieght placed on it (if the makes sense). if i get around to taking pictures of it i'll post em.

also, i do believe the petzel foot ascender is right only..however CMI has introduced a left and right foot ascender with cam lock on it, if memory serves me there was a thread on this site to that regard as well.

i also would not try to use a new system for the first time on a tall ascent...there is always some element of a new system that is hard to predict until you try it and see how everything works together. i was doing maybe 30 foot ascents before i ever attempted this at work. stuff like this takes time to work out the kinks and to become comfortable with. my arms still do a bit of work because i do not have a stationary chest support, but i am now the first to be nominated at work for the tall pines...i love it.

good luck with your new configuration tockmal...i hope you find it works well

Phil, Thanks for the reply. Great technique.

Mahk, thanks for the link to the other thread.

Hi everyone. I am looking to set up a Double Bungee Ropewalker system as described in On Rope on page 149, with additional illustrations on page 173. I've made a layout of the things I'm planning to get. Take a look at it and let me know what I should change.

I have the ISC ascender...and that's it! I wanna run this by all the board members before I start buying a couple hundred dollars worth of gear.

that would be the frog system without a chest acender. and that looks exhausting. i can say that b/c i have done that very same thing - i tried using my blakes backup above the cong ascender instead of the chest ascender with the rest of frog sys.(pantin, sling for left foot, with 2nd climb rope as attachment). when i tried to ascend with speed (without chest ascender) my upper body would drift away from the rope causing me to use ALL my arm strength to try to stay upright, creating a slopy, tiresome tech. (wasn't horrible just not ideal)the chest ascender is key to making the frog useful and fluent. i think it also works more efficient if one takes smaller foot strides to avoid excessive rocking hence seeking an fairly upright ascent.
if i am wrong, and the climber does have a chest ascender on, then i would say a the climber is trying too hard to ascend the rope as fast as possible. i found that sometimes pacing myself with a controlled/fluid ascent is more efficient than giving it all i've got.

the frog sys. is on p.36 of sherrill cat. i already had the cong ascend and pantin. i bought a chest ascend and long sling with a blue bandit band (p.19) 4 ro 5 inch from end to make a tight foot strap thing. so for $30. (cost of chest asc. and sling) i made frog system.
BACK UP ASCENDERS
the climber had cong asc.,pantin, something for foot strap - maybe a sling, i don't know.

Take a look at the ascent system comparison chart in ON ROPE. There are trade-offs for each system. A true ropewalker system is the most effecient way to climb a rope but it takes the longest to attach and remove and is the most expensive. To me, for ascents under 100' the frog walker is the best compromise.

Getting all of the parts of the system tuned takes some time but when they are in unison it is very easy and quick to move into the tree.

The PMI Single Roller I'm planning on getting looks to be the cats meow! I'm interested to see what Rory has. I know he lurks around here some time... RORY!!!! SPEAK UP!!!!

Tom, I've poured over those pages of On Rope many times. The pages say to me, "don't do it, don't do it...it's gear intensive and the time you'll save ascending will be wasted by the time you'll have to spend to "undress" when you get to the top...you'll have a lot of gear to lug around...this is gonna be expensive...don't do it....don't do it!!!"

Regardless, I wanna give it a shot. I think I might end up setting up this system, then I'll scale it down in some way that works well for me.

Partly I want to do it for the fun of it. I want to gather the pieces and build the chest harness and fine tune the system. This is fun for me! Plus, I got a heck of a sewing machine...it'd be a waste to not use it...
