Now if there has been a post on this before someone please direct me....

But anyways I can do the splice well with no problems...until I get to the part of the second bury as I heard people say. I can do it and have done it twice but I really struggle with it.

It someone could be kind enough to post some ideas with pictures or even a youtube video that would be great because watching people do the second bury at like tcia it is barely a struggle

all the help is appreciated

hey countryboy thanks so much for the post...I am actually working on replicating your rope guide and put a piece of tubing in the eye like some suggested to keep it rigid helping in retrieval...i will have pics soon once i finish it

Yes thank you, looks like I'm going to revisit this splice. Its such a PITA. It is nice to hear him state a few times how nasty this splice can be.

tried using my toss wand on 16 strand and couldnt sneak it through the overlap, I have been using the wire basket fid to do the first 2 steps he showed in one step until i get clost to the core exiting the cover, then i use a coat hanger fid or piano wire fid from there.

Toss wand is too big for 16-strand. Nick will kill me for divulging the secret but the best way to splice 16 strand is to pull the core rather than trying to squeeze past it.
The bury is 28"... it ain't gonna just slip out... and the core doesn't contribute to the rated strength of the rope.
I've not spliced a lifeline that way but none of my 16-strand friction savers have cores and those splices haven't budged a millimeter.

hey I really like those friction savers out of 16 strand...can you post some measurements and directions maybe?

I am not an experienced splicer but I have done some 16 strand splicing. It is my understanding that the crossover is a very important part the splice, it adds a lot of strength to it. Pulling the crossover through can be challenging, but is necessary.

I have spliced a couple 16 strand friction savers, and yes the entire core is removed but there is still a crossover, or there should be.

I doubt seriously the crossover adds strength. It's conceivable it actually reduces strength by tightening the braid. It MAY inhibit unloaded withdrawal of the bury but lock stitching does that well enough.

I use my friction savers all the time, they haven't moved at all. I'll defer to Norm on this this though, I'm not an expert.

I was told that lock stitching doesn't add any strength to a properly executed 16 strand splice. Though it should still be done because it is in the splicing recommendations.

Blinky you may be right about the crossover not adding any strength, but I wouldn't climb on one spliced that way. At least until I saw some break test results with no crossover. Pulling the crossover with a wire fid, once you have got the feel for making sure you haven't caught any strands of the core, is not that bad.

Lock stitching has nothing to do with strength, it's to prevent the bury from withdrawing under low/no load conditions. When the splice is under load there is no way it will come out.

Rope strength degrades with the tightness of the braid. When you pack a rope with core, you effectively tighten the braid and reduce the rope's strength... not much, but some.

Do what you want but there are a LOT of 16 strand splices out there with no core and I've never heard of one failing from withdrawal. When they are load tested they break rather than withdraw.

It's my understanding that the crossover helps hold it all in place. If you and I splice our friction savers the same way, you cross the covers over in the middle, correct?? Isn't the crossover in a standard 16 strand splice intended to do the same??

A properly done crossover is to keep the diameter consistant.
A lock stitch doesn't add or subtract from rope strength. It is there to prevent the eye from pulling out under low loads.
As far as strength with the filler strands in a 16 strand 1/2" rope, consult the manufacturer. Granted, the eye doesn't have the filler strands in it, but it does have 2 parts of rope. I don't think it affects strength.

I only splice one end so no crossover. I do have one with rings on both ends but the buries don't cross, they just meet but have very gradual tapers so the change in thickness isn't noticeable.

Hey if it works and is safe I am all for it. Definitely would make the splice a lot easier, it is just not what I was shown. In my mind the crossover really locks things up. That may just be all in my head though.

I am going to spend a day down at Rich H's shop one day this week, to try and soak up some splicing knowledge. I'll get his take on it for sure.

hey awesome post some of the things you learn about this splice

Rich is the MAN.

I agree the crossover really locks 16 strand down but I just hate that fight. You're right that if you get everything nice and clean and don't catch any core strands it goes MUCH better... I just end up catching those core strands almost every time.

Well I'm stuck on this part yet again. I'm only 2 inches away from finishing. Such a pain in the butt. I might try the no core and send it to knot and rope to break it.
