Something in New Jersey

Hello all - here is another tree that I spotted while in New Jersey at another historic cemetary, you must admit the older cemetaries have some wonderful trees.

this are three pictures - bark - leaves and fruit, none of the flowers.

Don't think its is Red Mulberry, I would say a Basswood perhaps Crimean Linden, Tilia x euchlora

I would look at Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants as a first reference for initial seperation of plants. There are lots of species and varieties of European basswoods, only one that I can think of (Tilia tomentosa) has silver undersides to the leaves. Dirr highly recommends this variety as a street and ornamental tree.

It is hard to tell without something for size comparison of the leaves. The bark and branches look like something other than americana but the leaves are very serrated which is like americana. Guess we need Jersey Girl to give us more info.

Ok i know it is a linden that is for sure - it is in NJ and i am in georgia. what other information would be needed. SIZE - it was over 50 foot - in a mature area, the church cemetary.

i have a few other pictures = again all i can confirm is that it is a linden. IF some one is in woodbridge, i can give them the location so they can visit.

there were no flowers - the pod like thingys (he he ) were open with the seeds attached, color on leaves was green on top and under.

let me know

I just looked at the second picture, I believe it's a Tilia Cordata, Little Leaf Linden. I didn't check a book or anything, just memory from college (Del. Valley College). I'm right next to Woodbridge. Is the cemetary on Rahway Ave?

here are more pictures

sorry this is all i have - no knowledge as to what type exactly.

i was thinking the americcan linden - Tilia Americana Linnaeus

QUESTIONS for you all, should i be touching the leaves to get texture and maybe smell? i am sure other things would also help.

i do hope this helps

Rahway ave. white church area. This is in the Trinty Church yard. go into the front gate and it is on the right near the handicap parking. this lot also have two very unusual sweet gum that are HUGH and they are growing like live oaks. gee what a vacation - hunting trees in cemetaries, sounds like fun ???

thanks
