Soil aeration and inoculation--quick and dirty

If a soil is sufficiently compacted / impervious to benefit from aerating, then I doubt the wrecking bar and $20 water cannon technique is practical or efficacious. Heavy clay soil by midsummer up here has the consistency of concrete...

Clay's bad in summer here too--it laughs at the air spade. That's why more targeted force is needed.

Practical and efficient ime, and good exercise!

Certainly good exercise!
Rented a commercial core tine aerator for our lawn once and instead of extracting plugs, it just daintily tiptoed it's way across the hard ground.

do something similar with bare root tree plantings.
Harvest soil from healthy tree and make a slurry, dip and plant.
I am too lazy at this point and feel the better long term solution is a thick layer of coarse mulch. plus the 4tine gdn fork to open up the top 6 inches or so

I am too lazy sometimes, so I get help.

The better long term solution is a thick layer of coarse mulch, but trees often need short term help.

The 4tine gdn fork to open up the top 6 inches or so is a great tool!
