so this guy is an arboist.

IF it looks, sounds, and acts like a DUCK, how come you can't call it one????

[/ QUOTE ]

You certainly can, but you wouldn't normally do it if they were from an ethnic group that you were familiar with. It just comes off as a slur sometimes when a perceived foreigner is described as being from their country of origin, for example 'This Mexican' as opposed to 'This dude.' I'm not being sensitive, I'm being observant.

(PS - Kudos again to D and A for his good deed. This thread is snowballing!)

Dandandatreeman, don't worry about the Mex thing brother , I'm full blooded Mexican , Latino .. I also have those vatos out here in SO-CAL doing crazy work like that , You did what you had to do , and hopefully you open their eyes to Safety ..

The boss ed called me and said he got the guy some gear so I hope he is just a little safer at least. He has also put me on some work he has, so I am going to sub climb for him. This turned out good I hope I never get there too late next time. I am not going to hesitate next time either.

If the guy is buying gear, invite him to sign up here and glean some more safety stuff...

Dan:

I think by now everyone knows what you meant. It was descriptive, and while not meaning to be derogitory of their ethnicity, the emotion of the situation just gave it that appearance. Most of my guys would agree with jf1962 as well.

Good on ya for steppin' up and leading by example! We do need more of this.

Holly: Hijole, vato!

That's a great story. Great reward, too, Dan. Thanks for sharing. It's amazing when someone can humble themselves enough to learn from another.

Getting more work from the experience is just icing on the cake.

Hooray!

Good work on stepping up.

You might suggest that the gear needs accompanying training to be used safely, and he should get some training texts in english or spanish, and could get to at least a seminar, or actual class on climbing and rigging, such as the N.A.T.S. or STARRS.

Good thread.
dandanthetreeman: That was a cool thing to do, giving them a hand. I have often seen some guys doing some horrible treework (no safety etc.), without interferring and maybe helping them out....

Glad I found google translate....

Hav en god dag allesammen! (Danish)

ive noticed over the years that about lunch time often all the white guys disappear come back about an hour later with 40oz sodas in there hand. the Hispanics sit down on the scaffolding eat lunch and get back to work. the work ethic aside, the number of illegals is well known. with the number of illegals working in some areas it hurts everyone, because that labor is there for a low price it lowers the potential wage for any of us ... unless you are paying dirt wages to begin with. For the legal immigrants one can have a tendancy to just assume they are another illegal. Honestly though If I could multiply my income by some 100 times by going south id be there by next week.

Amen to that. Ill bet the majority of people on here wouldnt think twice do do whatever they needed to do in order to give their kids a better life.

Oh and about the lunch thing....NOTHING drives me nuts more that the crew leaving to get lunch. My dream rig will have a mini kithenette to take care of that problem.
Anyone here cook burritos on the engine manifold between jobs? mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

In the winter, I have taken a small two burner white gas/ Coleman fuel camping stove when I was with a big crew. You can get a simple cheap Coleman burner that attaches to a propane cylinder that is compact, if you really like a little hot something. Through in a French Press and have some coffee. I have the French Press coffee mug. Just add grounds and hot water, press to filter. voila!

Hot lun...Hot food for lunch is much nicer than cold lunch.
