slings for hanging pullys and blocks

i was thinking about learning but for now i need something strong, practical and pro-grade.
i dont wanna be responsible for a bad splice i made breaking and have my block and load fall to the ground and hurt someone so i think i'll have a pro do mine. so a 15 foot 5/8 sling with a 6 inch eye good for average sized jobs? up to like 16-20 dbh?

I see your point. I bought my first one or two pre made come to think of it. I think a 12' 5/8 sling is enough to timber hitch around average trunks up to 20" in diameter. Pretty sure. Good luck

How big of stuff are you loading?

I use 1" tubular web slings a lot for smaller /medium stuff.

You just fold it to fit in the upper sheave, works real good for stuff that is too small to warrant a rope-sling; fast off and on and with different sized slings, it is pretty easy.

To add to this idea, which I use myself frequently, if a crotch is available, I use a basket configuration over a girth hitch for more working strength.

yep, me too :) webslings will handle a good sized load with ease, IF it is basket-configured for really big stuff, but for the smaller and med. stuff, girth hitching works well :)

Assuming for a bull line you may be using 5/8s or even larger?

Your block eye slings should be rated higher than the rope you are using. Generally speaking.

If I'm using a pulley, its light rigging, minimal shockloading, and use a web sling, whether regular sewn sling, sewn spectra, or beer-knotted tubular webbing.

If I'm catching a top, or negative blocking, or heavier rigging, always a block with a 5/8 or 3/4" loopie sling or 12 or 16' x 3/4" double braid dead-eye sling. Pulleys may handle some of this, but they will get ruined over time.

alright so back to the subject at hand here. what type of slings do you guys find yourselves using the most for hanging blocks or pulleys?? ex. diameter rope, length, 1-2 eyes?

A 5/8's" sling will get you through most removals.
Go with a double braid and a 9" eye. A bigger eye will help absorb the shock. If possible, get a nylon core/polyester cover DB(All Gear's Husky, Yale's Polydyne, Samson's Nystron, New England Ropes' poly/nylon DB ). It absorbs shock better than a poly/poly DB. A DB sling will last much longer than a hollow braid sling, plus it's much easier to untie after loading. The length will depend on the diameter limbs you're gonna tie to.
Hollow braids are good for rope tools (loopie, whoopie, etc), but will more than likely pick when used as an eye sling. I have more than 1 picked hollow braid eye sling. Don't have any picked DB slings.

I like to use a 5/8" DB dead eye sling with a large spliced eye, around 12ft long. This will get us through most removals without having to change out the sling. We also use a 1/2" loopie for some stuff, especially for the beginners who don't yet know how to tie a dead eye sling off.

I'll also use a 3/8" loopie in place of a webbing sling for light rigging situations. Gives me more adjustability than a standard webbing sling.
