Skiing

I am in the midwest, so there isnt much for mountains here. That means no powder and alot of ice. But I still frequent the local hills around Minnesota and Wisconsin with my snowboard. Although we have zero snow on the ground, the local hills are starting to open a few runs with 100% man made snow!! Cant wait to get out and carve the ice!!

I alpine ski, and also have full alpine touring/back country gear.
Been "retired" from pro ski photography for a while, too long actually, looking to start some serious shooting again.

Home is Crystal Mt/Alpental/Mt Baker...we had our earliest opening in 28 yrs...Baker and Crystal are in full operation, Baker had a 91 inch base for its open, and I was there..it was their busiest mid week day ever. All of that was deep, skiable pow. Now we have the danged high pressure ridge, and an inversion, the temps on top have approached 50 degrees..Aarggghh.

I saw a trip report from Berthoud Pass from yesterday on TGR---schweet!! too bad there's already been an avy fatality there.

Pete Donzelli shared his mantra with me:

Half the binding, twice the fun!

Or, as Neptune Mountaineering says:

Pinheads from Hell

Telemark here :)

Give a call anytime you fancy going skiing!

or, "free the heel and free the mind"

and "Go telly on the mountain!!""

Tom, if you have some time, you might enjoy perusing the Hummel brothers' website: http://cascadecrusades.org/

They are two of the most accomplished tele skiers ever, and together with other alpine and tele skiers, have amassed an impressive array of (some very steep) first descents in the Cascades. I've skiied with them and several of their b.c. clan, but seem to have trouble finding the time or energy to get out with them on their awesome adventures.

Great panorama shots of volcanos and cascade peaks.

If you are into hut skiing, check this place out:

My good friend Connelly owns this operation. I have gone up there a couple of times, great skiing! Dry intermountain snow and great terrain!

Hi Guys

We're going into summer down here in the south pacific but always keen to talk skiing exspecially telemarking.

The local hill here in the nrth island in Mt Ruapahu it has three resorts on it and heaps of back country options. It is a volcano and a few years ago skiers had to dodge the lahas oozing down the slopes.

You guys have it good in the northern hemisphere though with the powder you get. Did a season at Lake Tahoe a few years ago, so i speak from experience.

Cheers

Vail Resorts is raising their ticket price to $81.....aarggh.

It is $44 at the Summit-at-Snoqualmie but I paid $299 for a season pass, and will have it paid for in two more days.
This is for 4 areas, by far the best is Alpental, which is wild and wooley, similar to the upper terrain at Bridger Bowl (thst requires hiking) and Mt Baker.

What a good start we're having! I've got 11 days in already after skiing last night-in 13 degree temps...The temps are keeping all the new snow from last week in prime shape, so I'll be hitting up the back country this weekend..look out for photos...

Here's a slide show...

Best place i boarded was Switzerland, in the ski area just up the mountain from Wengen, which i cant remember how to write in german. Has an amazing bar called the TiPi Bar and yes its TiPi shaped. Was once a Ski Tech before being an arborist, so i can fix your skis too. My area was Glenshee Scotland but that was when we had snow all these years ago, back in the ICE AGE, but i got a free season pass so that was cool.

Dreaming tree

Once visited Steamboat a few summers back looks real nice up there, was staying at the C lazy U Ranch and went for a drive with my Southern Belle.
