Show off them splices

13echo4,
Have you got any videos or photos of those drop tests? I'd like to see how you do them and the results.
I do not, but I will make some over the next few days. We've started cutting corn so it might be a little longer but I will asap.
Tuttle thanks for the concern. The last run run of stitches are going thru the middle, plus I have lock stitches running 90 degrees from the main stitches I really just do that to keep the eye and tail nice and tight . On top of that I wrap the splices with electric tape electric tape. I took the tape off to take pictures and inspect.

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense, and I kinda figured that was your technique (or something similar to that). Might I remind you that your efforts may be in vain since a whip lock or any lock stitch in a splice is only there to keep an unloaded splice from creeping, a double braid, 12 strand, or any other splice under load (unless done wrong) will not budge. So, I would suggest if your'e doing alot of splices, like ABR does for Treestuff.com, save yourself the time and effort and move away from the throat, IMO. Keep up the good work ;-)

I give the throat a good beating with a mallet, to aid the whipping, I feel its a better spot to whip close to the throat than further away from the eye, as all the rope fibers are still in a weave.

Speaking strictly of double braids, I've cut a few splices off that didn't turn out right...so I could start over. I would've pulled them out as I've heard people discuss, but that seemed impossible so maybe I'm missing something there. Anyway, it was really interesting to look at the cross section inside and see how far the bury goes in there. It looks like a gobstopper inside with multiple color layers. There was a lot more depth to the braided line, before the taper than I expected. 2-4" below the throat and I'm sure proper stitching will hold.

Here is a really poor test. I'm only using 300 lbs because I didnt have enough slings to include the other 4 weights. The videos are poor I'm sorry about this, I will make a better video. This was my only chance to do this and I didn't want to keep you hanging.
This is two videos, on is a fail in that the cordage slipped and the weight hit the ground. If you watch close you can see it slip. The second time it holds. Any way here's a way you can test your splices.
Materials:
28" 8mm op sewn eye2eye
5' web lanyard
6 50# weights
1.5" rope
The test was dropping 300 lbs 5' and being arrested by a 5' lanyard attached to a 1.5" rope by a 3/8 op cord with sewn eyes.

Vortex tight eye...just did my first and it came out sweet. My question is to those of you splicing Vortex, do you lock stitch it, whip it, shrink tube it, or do nothing. Thanks.

Well honestly, as tight as that stuff gets it's probably never coming loose if done correctly...most double braids that is. Hollow braid is totally a different story. But i always feel safer with a back-up. And SOP is to either lock stitch or whip stitch. To me, whip stitching a few inches below the throat is easiest. But you'll still need a sailors palm, or a vise to hold your needle, to help punch it through that 'hard as a rock' splice. Heat shrink will do nothing to assure the splice doesn't back out.

Hope you're gonna show off some pics :)

Thanks Logic, also nice to hear that my splice throat is supposed to be that hard. I wasn't sure but I followed the book to the letter and just figured that was just the way Vortex ends up.

My new rigging whoopie.
3/4" tenex, XRR, 2 Pensafe 7700 rings.
3-6' adjustment.
I beat the hell out of this today and it performed beautifully!
I'll probably replace the rings with a Newco thimble when I get one but for now this thing rocks.
Thanks for the idea Oldfart.

Nice job on the Vortex ML. I got a piece of that a year and a half ago and really liked the way the splice went together on it. I just got a length of Sumac and spliced it today. It went together ok, but I seem to have a bit of an issue when I make the last core bury. At the point where it exits the cover, it seems to pull a strand or two of the cover and it is hard to work it back in. I used a wire fid to pull it through and the last 2 inches on both ends were extremely hard to pull. Any suggestions from the experts would be appreciated. Nick???
