My mentors was rigging 40' oak limbs on true blue, so perfecty balanced that youcould push the but around with one finger, back before Youtube... maybe the pieces are just bigger than you;re used to... It's not the pieces that concern me, it's the lighthearted attitude with which these new guys are approaching the work. Seems like there is not much respect for the inherent danger of the job.

I think he was meaning big for the sake of big. There's no doubt there's a time and place, and skillset, for taking mondo pieces. Too often we're seeing videos of folks getting wrapped around spars, pushing modern gear to the limits, failing anchor points, launching groundies, or any other antics and folks just laughing it off. I think that's mostly what was meant, not taking a jab at those who actually possess the skill, knowledge, experience, and ability to take large pieces, explain why, teach while doing it, and do it safely without replacing ropes every week.

I avoid it wherever possible.
Bear in mind I’m always in the tree rather than in a bucket, which changes things.

A good and experience ground team is often overlooked, and often the most critical piece of any negative rigging scenario.

Exactly. We've been there, and there's times where there's not much of another option aside from blowing out a top. But younger dudes, new owners, young foremen, green groundies don't understand the risks.

We've watched for decades as we consistently stay in the top bracket for workplace injuries and fatalities, despite major advances in equipment, gear, safety, education, and the availability of that minimum standards of education.

Why does it proliferate despite all of these advances? There's no way it's just ego.

In my understanding in studying this issue, it comes down to the economics of the business and industry. Owners tend to be undereducated due to the low barrier of entry to the industry. That makes business for extraction the norm. Those same people often demean education, and it's not until a worker gets injured, sees enough, or gets treated bad enough that they leave. But young folks may not have the wherewithall to understand that variance.

I think you're reading this one incorrectly... this guy purposely put himself right in the DZ so he could film it as he moved out of the way, then he and his buddy just laughed it off... I've had some communications with him.. Told hi his attitude is justaskingfor seriuous injury or death... he just doesn't get it.. hope the Angels are looking out for him... he looks like he's going to keep them busy... I SURE DID when I was young..

I didn't articulate that well enough. It looked intentional, but I immediately moved on to the lesson instead of stressing his ignorance.

Man, if someone reaches out to me with knowledge, an ego check, or what have you, I make sure to listen. It takes a stand up person to reach out through kindness to offer help.

I hope we don't see him or his buddy on dripline.
