Saw this ad. Thoughts?

I'm staying out of this clusterfuck. But, I'll at least say this...

As someone who has done a considerable amount of web design work, the pic doesn't need to come down off the site. It just needs a caption.

"During lunch break, little Jimmy tries to help out dad... no, the chipper isn't running."

That's all the fuck it takes to turn your moral dilemna of the year into a nothing issue. No government intervention, no name-calling on the interwebs, no heartburn, stress and agonizing over the fate of children of tree workers being consumed en masse by chippers... and no drama.

The issue isn't that idiots on forums will think tree workers are bad parents... it's that some city kid will see pictures like this with no context and think chippers are harmless playground equipment. Although not a legal issue, common sense would dictate that you provide context, just to be safe. That takes about two minutes of HTML coding, and isn't asking too much.

You speak of societal ideologies, which are all well and good but they do not supersede real truths ......
We could go back and forth all day with that reply to each other.

I agree with the founders of America that hat all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights. You don't. I believe you have the right to believe that and have no interest in taking that away from you.

Two entirely different world views...but we can still get along very well together, and I'm OK with that! Not trying to pick a fight over it or change your mind about anything in this regard, just letting you know there are other perceptions of reality out there.

...., even the worlds greatest moron wouldn't let a kid do that body/chipper positioning with the chipper running. We have no context, just "how it appears". .....

You haven't spent much time around the Amish have you?

(Not that I've seen an Amish kid feeding a chipper...but it is probably less dangerous than what I have seen kids doing at saw mills and on logging jobs - not for play.)

Yes i’ve been around the Amish. I’m not commenting on kids doing “dangerous” jobs at all. It’s dangerous being alive, was commenting on the probability that the chipper was running when the photo was taken, i’ll bet good money it wasn’t ‘cause I doubt Cory is a moron. That’s what i’m talking about, the photo is useless as a discussion point except to point out how useless it is ;-)

With many countries becoming nanny states the claim that someone of white privilege no longer has to fear this possibility is probably not true anymore...
I’m just surprised that out of this whole thread, one of us had to deal with the very real and true fall out of taking their kid up a tree.
I’m even more shocked that there hasn’t been any response to this!
How many of us here own kid saddles for our own to enjoy the canopy? This could have happened to anyone of us, but it hasn’t. Until you change the color or creed then it could be considered child abuse!

In most of the western world it’s now the opposite. Count yourself lucky if it is not like that near you...

Are you speaking of the photo of the boy near the chipper chute? If so it was posted on Corys Tree Service website by the owners of the company. The photo was brought to our attention on TreeBuzz by Tree Frog, who according to Cory is a nearby competitor in Florida.

Wow this thread exploded.

Rico. I’ve been running a business here for 9 years and have never heard of Cory before clicking on a google add while viewing a local forum a customer asked me to review.

We are targeting a whole different clientele.

I don't think it had anything to do with race. It did have a class aspect to it though. It felt like if I lived in a rich area I could swing my children from a tire swing with a crappy rope and nobody would complain. If anybody did the police and the quasi-governmental child protection service people would think twice before harassing someone with connections and money for a lawyer.

The child protection people harrass poor people who have a hard time providing a perfect environment for their children.

It also had a cultural aspect in that it is OK to tie your children to the back of a speed boat and pull them around a lake.

They couldn't find anything else to complain about, my children have never been hospitalized, and are well looked after, Healthy and happy.

So they left us alone.

If we had been struggling more it probably would have been harder to get them off our backs.

My beef is not with you Tree_Frog. I was simply stating that Cory had told me that the person who started this thread (you) was one of Cory's local competitors, and you have just corroborated that. I will let others here decide for themselves as to how they feel about using Treebuzz as a place for negative advertisement against a local competitor. I myself wouldn't do it, but I am not gonna judge anyone too harshly for doing so.

I have made it very clear that it was the reactions, assumptions, and rush to judgement of some here that royally pissed me off. Accusing someone of child endangerment and threatening to call the authorities without knowing the facts can have devastating real-life effects on people's lives. Who the fuck would do something like that without knowing the facts of the situation?

BOOM - there it is........ Great post

I can bore you forever with stories about safety-minded and well meaning arbs calling me out for stuff I was doing “wrong”. It started when I first started climbing 15 years ago and it has never stopped. It’s amazing I’m alive apparently and that other people haven’t died just by looking at my gear photos (thank you Nick Bonner). There is the appearance of things and there is the actuality of things. There is the problem of people with chainsaws killing and maiming themselves in trees and on the ground on a regular basis. There will always be an argument between the “keepers of safety” and those who don’t maintain correct “appearances” yet work and act consciously with skill guided by their own practical experience. So it goes, life in the tree lane.

I checked Cory's website last night and the pic's gone, the problem's solved.

I accept that it was an innocent misinterpretation of family tradition being perpetuated.

My little redhead daughter could footlock like nobody's business at eight years old, split the lines n lean forward, look papa, no hands!

Kudo's to Cory n family!

What if he has Benjamin Button disease where he ages very slowly and is actually Corys dad and the grandfather to the other children and started the business back in 1975 after returning from Vietnam. He bought the chipper in question as a replacement for the old Asplund chipper he wore out years ago. That would explain the no PPE situation. That would make this entire thread a waste of time. Oh wait.

If that holds, great minds never get much done...
That is the dumbest comment I've read in a while. Great minds never get much done? So you're saying Warren Buffet, Steve Job, Andrew Carnegie, John D Rockefeller, Ray Dalio, I mean I can go on and on, based on this great minds alone your opinion is that they never get much done lol.

I don't condemn when someone spends time out of their day to post and criticize others doings. Simply goes back to this quote which I've follow for years.
Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.
I'm guessing that if only ideas were discussed - nothing gets done. Who carries the ideas through to a final outcome?? 2 different people typically. Lots of people have million dollar ideas, but how many people capitalized?

Surround yourself with great people and great things will happen - that's what keeps the guys going you referenced.

You obviously don't understand the quote. If only ideas were discussed nothing gets done? What??? Some of the crap we have to read on here is unreal. Through ideas is how you start then you make a plan, great mind discuss ideas not talking shit about someone in a picture when you have no clue of what's going on in that picture because you have no information about it is small minded thinking.

So, I was discussing an idea, and you replied by discussing people. Is this shit for real?

Why on earth did you go off like that? It's just not worth it. It gets nothing good done.

Fair enough - here's an idea, stick your head up your ass...... if you keep reading this you will see that it's not an attack, it's just an idea..... what you choose to do with it is on you. We can discuss where you choose to place your head, but in reality all discussion really comes down to WHO is willing to do the work of actually putting your head in your ass.
