Safe work from the bucket...

[ QUOTE ]
One hand saw use is being frowned upon by the choir , teach new guys how to climb like parapalegics , dress like firefighters in a tree . You actually asked two questions , what are safe bucket operators doing and "should " I one hand a saw . I haven't been under a rock , I just one hand saw when ever I feel like it .

"It was a question intended to elicit any and all responses. Why you buggin' man?"

I guess you just want responses from the choir . I'll put it like this , I did two tours of voullunteer work for the choir at Arlington VA. Everyone was there , I don't think anyone was hurt either time , and this one hand debate was going on back than too , You couldn't walk by a station of trimmers and not see one hand use . You'll be talking about this for the next twenty years too . If you really want to stop one handed saw use , stop selling saws that you can one hand . One more point , I am a safe climber / bucket operator , file it .

You against the world, bro!

i work for the same cg full time the handling is really doing a number on my hands ive been climbing for over twenty yrs with no problems after less then using a bucket my hands are getting bad so i do rope allot out of the bucket to try and prolong carpentunnel. the saws are designed for one handed operation today man i came up through the ranks with the old metal 020 makes Popeye forearms. Whenever possible one should use two hands you should always try to position your body not to get hit with the saw to. when i train i try to have the climber put his lanyard between the knee and waist and cut no higher then the chest preferably not even that high i know i went off subject a little oh well its in the name of safety right

You against the world, bro!

No , sorry pal . You're in another world . You ask a stupid question and you aren't ready to back it up . But your Tom The Tree man , not Tom the saw man . ahhh got ya ! cmon man , you're typing things to read . Han Solo . thats pretty funny . I put one hand on my mouth I was laughing so hard . It ain't me against the world , it is what it is . Your a treeclimbing robot and and it;s you against yoursself . I have one hand up , and one finger raised , guess what one . 4 u bro...

OSHA ANSI is not the reason I do things safe. They can only create a monetary discouragement. They have reason behind their regualtions. You should use those to justify your own safe practices. One handing a saw just opens you up to an unsafe situation when there are safer options. Im not saying I never 1 handed a saw but It is not good practice and I avoid it.
Speeding while driving is law enforced but in a situation you are less able to avoid/correct an incident. most people dont think of that as safety but a ticket they dont want. Safety should be for work and life in general.
Something to think about.

Allmark , please , one hand saw use is not a danger . Speeding is way worse . Quit all the BS . half the people in the world who own a saw , one hand a saw . next thing you know one hand saw use will cause cancer , everyone does it , except the choir , think about that . Life in general has a lot more to do with other crap than a chainsaw ! Sing choir sing ..... whats that song ? oh yeah ., two hands , two ropes and a water bag on my back , don't ride a crane cause that's insane ,listen to me ...be more like Tarzan, and less like Jane .

back to the topic of bucket saw use......

This is a picture one tree service used in a yellow page advertisement that came out in my county, this year, 2009.

This is one of the many stupid advertisements I have seen. sorry, but I think I can't call it nothing else but stupid.

this one pertains to bucket saw use, but I could go on and on about all the other stupid pictures people use or the wording they use in their advertisements.

pictured here is a guy in a bucket, a t-shirt and a baseball hat. He is leaning out of the bucket, cutting about an 8 inch to 10 inch diameter section of trunk. cutting with one hand, trying to hold with the other.

take a look.

Am I being mean?, or is this a really stupid picture to use in your advertising. (I zoomed in to keep out their company name and phone number).

It seems as though Riggs has stirred himself up with little to no outside help.

I disagree. speeding with 2 hands on the steering wheel is safer than one handing a chainsaw.

"You ask a stupid question and you aren't ready to back it up."

Actually, what happened is, you read my question, but you already have an opinion formed about anyone who brings up the subject of one handing and safety, so you formed an opinion about me and my question without objectivity.

Several of the posters that responded say that they one hand when they deem it safe... Do you see me disparaging them or calling them out? I even said that I do it sometimes.

It really was an objective question. Just wanted to know what folks were doing and what is deemed 'safe' with all of the safety consciousness going on these days.

TreeCo, you and Riggs should buy matching outfits and take this show on the road!

Perhaps no one would listen to you two, but at least your outfits would be cute!

Hey if attire is your bag you just might be in the wrong biz!
grin.gif

I've got over 20 years of cutting, tossing and rigging both climbing and out of a bucket truck. Both sides in this debate have a lot of experience in this biz and it's an age old question.

Treeclimber1 this is exactly what I was trying to say. rope as much as possible because why would one want to do more damage to oneself than we already do. I most likely am still going to use one hand on the saw but with less stress on my shoulders and elbows and wrists. It took me years to realize this. Plus I feel that less damage is done when limbs are roped.

I tried to get on "Project Runway", but Tim Gunn said my ideas about fashion were "too far out there".

Go figure.

As far as the age old debate about one-handing chainsaws....you are right. It rages on, regardless of whether or not anyone's mind will be changed. You either see a problem with it, or you don't.

I just don't want anyone I know to get injured by that particular move (especially if it's avoidable).

There are more things wrong in that pic than the one handed saw use, and you know it. i think you posted this to stir the pot with Riggs......

i honestly did not post it to stir the pot with Riggs and I don't know why it would stir the pot with Riggs, I guess i don't know the characters on the buzz enough to know why you said this.

i use one handed saw use quite often (when it's safe and far from the body or ropes), i just felt that this picture i posted did not look like safe one handed saw use, that's all and was suprised someone would use that picture in advertising.

I see now, sorry!

One handed saw use is PERFECTLY safe, if you use COMMON SENSE! trouble is you cant teach common sense.

Too many guys one hand a saw all the time, even whgen climbing in precarious positions and wonder, 'what happened, I always do it that way'!

"TreeCo, you and Riggs should buy matching outfits and take this show on the road! "
should they be "happy" little outfits ? Love your aviator , but I hate to break the news to you , If me and tree co were on the road , he'd be driving and he be getting the coffee . No offense treeco , but I like it black . Bite your tongue , I'll be in RI

Commen sense is right , but I cut and throw my whole life out of a bucket/climbing . 28 years , a few non related injuries. You are in a bucket , are you gonna turn your saw off every time you move the bucket ? I have ripped trees apart by having my right hand on the throttle and my left hand on the saw and never shut it off. Think green , right ? unless you are a complete idiot , how are you gonna cut your self ? I know , hold the saw in front of your face ( my buddy did that and had seventy stiches) cross your hands ( why ?) hold the saw within a few inches of your other hand ( why?) . There was a day when you could call a man /woman an idiot and still have a job . Stupid people deserve what they get , and no label or law can save them . I know we are all grouped together , but "IT is what it is !"
