Rope Wrench vs Unicender

Still just farting around with it so I'm using the tether that came with it.

For my SRT style (a variation on Gerry rope walker using knee & foot ascenders with a chest box) I manually push the uni up the rope so I'm not needing the dee ring set up you came up with, In time I think I'll go shorter and may even put a spacer above the uni to keep the RW cocked and ready to go.

Again, time in the saddle will help sort that stuff out.

So has the issue of clocking yourself in the face or your helmet cam with the rope wrench or its associated hardware been discussed yet?

Had another great climb with the uni today. dDrt setup and a lot more control. worked on feathering it during the rappel out. the control is definitely there. Still not ready to run it with a flying leap though!

The RW function could be made integral to the Uni, by using a headstock. If I have time, I hope to work on this idea next.

Well the jury is in, RW/UNI combo is da-bomb...Knocked out 8 deadwooding prunes with an average climb of 50 feet yesterday.

Finally found the sweet spot of my set up and was able to do some flying as well as smooth & fast exits from the tree.

Still sorting out the limbwalking aspects, especially the return, but this will be my goto setup for quick climbs.

ThanX Dave McN for sharing your Set Up!

Great news,Rick!

As for the limb-walking, it too, will become much easier the more you use SRT. The ease of redirects will encourage their use and the more upright body posture that SRT encourages, will combine and make the whole process more fluid and more energy efficient.

I prefer to take the Rope Wrench off during ascent so this is my tether, 4 inch double snap:

I'm not 100% up on the load sharing of the RW with the uni so this may be an ignorant question...how does the double snap compare/meet the minimum strength requirements for the system?

Is that even an issue?

The RW just shares the load on descent so that one-handed positioning is possible. I dont know how strong the double snap is but it never was an issue when I used this system. In event of failure of the double snap the uni will not give an inch.

I made a wrench in the garage this morning.. holy ish the combo of the two is delicious.

I remember Rick posting when I was selling my wrench to buy the uni to keep it and try the two together... wish I had now. I'm going to ride on the wrench I made today until the new one comes out.

Anymore feedback on tethers since this thread started?

Looks like a stiff tether is best for the uni/rw combo. I've shortened the maxicord tether and it is effective, but nowheres near as much as the stiff tether that DMC uses.

My only gripe about daves is that it is not quick on quick off from the uni. Depending onthe climb I'll run dDrt or SRT and I prefer to use the uni for both so a quick removable tether makes sense.

I'm going to try the double dog snap and see how that works simply because it is QOO. I'm still trying to figure a QOO version of daves tether though.

As a last ditch effort I may try serving the maxicord to stiffen that while allowing it to ungirth from the uni. Not sure how well it will work though. I may ask Kevin if we could get away with a slick pin on the tether end of the RW. if so that would open possibilities as well.

Rick,

Have you thought about running the maxicord through a piece of plastic tubing? Air hydraulic lines are stiffer than the stuff that you'd find for home plumbing.

Serving with a splint of some kind has merit too.

Pics of course ;)

I'd like a quick on/off tether for the same reason. I have a vision in my head of an aluminum tether that I'll leave on the wrench side and I'll make a large hinging gate on the uni side that I'll close with another slic pin. When the new wrench comes out I'll make one and post some pics.

Finally got around to making a rough version.

Uni_RW_tether.jpg

5/8" x 1" aluminum bar stock tapered down to the width of the rear part of the new wrench. For the time being I tapped a hole for a bolt to retain the uni. When I make the final hard tether I'll raise the opening that goes over the uni headstock and use a 1" quick release pin to retain it.

So far the only change I want to make is making the top tending hold closer to the wrench and offset toward me. Other than that, it's quick on and off and I'm happy.

lol I think I've heard a thing or two about it...

I'll get one for sure after the testing is finished and they're for sale. So many gadgets so little time.. you get a dualcender and I'll get a HH and we can trade off for a few weeks!

Adam,

Awesome looking tether! That is exactly what I'm looking for.

How long did it take to machine that bad-boy?

What sort of differences in design do you see necessary for use with the original RW?

BTW, DM, the Uni/RW combo is now my go to set up, replacing my LJ 100% now. Am getting quite used to the "feathering" both in SRT (with the RW) adn dDrt when climbing without the RW.

Not looking back in either direction either!
