I was wondering if there are any other types of rope snaps out there other than the red or blue ones(sorry i cant be more descriptive)? i ordered one from sherrill and less than one month later the gate sticks open. said ok sh*tty snap. ordered one from fresco got nearly the same one and 3 weeks later same BS! its not like it gets abused. it sits on my hip and goes around tree parts. WTF! so now i need another snap for my lanyard. any suggestions? preferably one that might last a bit.
cheers tex

Hey Rugger, which snap did you get from Fresco? They now have a beautiful Climbing Technology (CT) snap that I know Sherrill does not carry. Everyone that I show them to loves them and quite a few guys on this site use them. Let me know if you are interested.

The cheeks on the snap keeper or safety gate must be getting crimped. It happens from being banged around in the tree. Normal use. I recall it would happen periodically on the old Kline safety-loc snaps I used. I'd have to pry them open with the tip of a screwdriver so they would work without sticking.

A sticking keeper on a lifeline snap is a bad omen. skull and cross bones

I'm not a fan of the red baron. It's very thin. It's strong enough, but it REQUIRES a thimble when spliced (or tied) onto the rope. The other one (Fresco item # 10336) is the most common on the market right now. You can get them from Sherrill to Bishop, and every tiny shop in between. They are not as good as the little ones that USED to be on the market (supposedly made by Kong).

I've tweaked the keeper/gate on my "kong" snap plenty of times. If that's the prob on yours, it's an easy fix.

jp,

I have been trying to locate a picture of it with no luck so far. They are not in the CT catalog online, but they are in their product catalog and that I can send you. I will take a picture of one and try to get it up soon.

Looks like you are a bit happy and smiley too...course with your weather why wouldn't you be.

Rich got me one of those CT snaps and I LOVE it!!!

The size is just right, large gate opening and the shape of the eye end of the snap fits right into my hand. It is a very easy snap to use.

Over the years I've had some of the safety tabs get bent like Jerry talked about. A gentle tweak with a screwdriver is all that's needed to get them back in shape. That said, it doesn't happen very often. Come to think of it maybe it's because I use a hitch for an adjuster not mechanicals. Maybe look at how your adjuster and snap hang together. You might be bumping them when you climb.
