I just got my RR in Dec. while it was still warm up here in Vermont. Now that the cold has finally set in I really see the need for a Slic Pin key. I think I saw where TreeStuff has one in the works. But until they have that to offer I thought I would see what I could use in the meantime.

Here is what I was able to put together from a spent 30-06 casing and less than $5 of stainless hardware from the Ace Hardware store.

I used a stainless socket head screw that had a lot of unthreaded shank and cut off most of the threaded portion, a stainless fender washer, spring (not stainless), and a Stainless Nyloc nut. The empty bullet casing is from a 30-06 that was shortened and works pretty well but if there is something a tad smaller it would work even better.

The next step will be to incorporate some sort of tether to the washer so as to be able to attach the key to either my saddle or to the RR. Also need to find a bullet caliber that is slightly smaller and perhaps a stainless spring.
hey, where in VT are you? can you make another one of those?

Oh get some cocoa butter Mac....
You guys might think i'm nutz, but believe me, i am!....No, seriuosly,...Go to the store and get the biggest tub of VICS VAPOR RUB you can find......and some nitrile disposable gloves for the "Hands" application.....syran wrap for the feet....

Step 1- soak in bath tub, and scrub hands and/or FEET several times to open pores.....
Step 2- after out of bathtub, dry off completely.....
Step 3- apply VICS VAPOR RUB to hand(s) and/or feet generously, and massage for half a minute or so....
Step 4-cover either feet with Syran wrap, or hands with rubber gloves....
Step 5-cover syran wrapped feet with socks, or rubber gloved hands with winter glove liners(if available)or socks....
then go to bed for the night.....

If you do this every other night for 5 days.....(Mon-Wed-Fri for example), i promise you, any and all of your skin problems will disappear.

Im talking even FUNGI-TOE

Try it.

It works!

Forgive me for not being able to see this, but where is that nylock nut located in the final product, and is that what keeps the spring-loaded socket head screw from popping completely out? Is it up inside the spent shell casing?

Thanks in advance for any answer you choose to provide. Nice design, also.

Hi Tim,

First I drilled a 17/64" hole in the end of the SPENT bullet case. Then installed the 1/4" socket head screw though the casing so the head of the screw is inside the casing and the shaft is extending out the end.
Next goes the washer then the spring and finally the Nyloc nut. The nut acts as the end of the plunger I push with my thumb.

Hope that helps.

I took your bullet casing idea and ran with it. 30-30 winchester fits the slik-pin perfectly. This is more like the John-Kays design with the spring on the inside.20160124_202515.webp

It does help. Thanks so much for taking the time to explain your idea so well, and for the great photographs that go along with your posts. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks also for sharing the ideas so freely.

A little late to the game, but wanted to give a shout out to Mac Swan for gifting me the walnut blanks and thus saving my occasionally lady-like hands in the process. As I am a lady, it seems an endeavor worth pursuing. Also huge thanks to Frank, whom I have yet to meet, for making those a reality. The walnut makes an unbelievable difference for me.

Your quiet welcome Ladybird. They look good. As a side note to all, I lost one yesterday, double sided tape is not a viable adhesive for these. I used Gorilla glue this time like the I did on the other side. Hey it was worth a shot.

N.e.Tree, I just got a hold of a 30-30 Win. and found it to be too small for the Slic Pin used in the RR. Are there different sized 30-30s?

use the right sized drill bit and you can drill a hole in anything to make a slic key. an addition of a bolt and nut for a plunger works well. plastic, wood, metal, nylon. a piece of bungee for a leash.

Not that I know of. I got a few I can send you if you'd like
N. e. Thanks for the offer. Let me get together with my gun toting buddies and see if they have something that fits a little better than the 30-06 I am currently using.
I will let you know if we have no luck.

Does anyone know or have ever tried to mount a twisted clevis over the lower slic pin to use as an advancement point. I realize the clevis would need to be drilled out to accept the slic pin but was just curious as I think it or something like it would make an excellent way to clip in and out for advancement.
