Rope Cleaner

Since ropes are basically recycled leisure sits (polyester), you can wash'em with most soaps. But I'm pretty sure the one thing you don't want on a rope is acid. I think Goo Gone is a citric acid concentrate. I wouldn't do it.

I work on alot of pine trees and had a problem after a while sliding my climbing knot, laundry detergint would not get it out so I called the manufacturer and after talking to new england rope they told me under no cercomstance to use anything more but to let the sap resadue dry out. I took that climbing line out off servive temparary and after about 3 week I had one of the guys wash it and it came out.
without the use of any harsh cleaning chemicals. our ropes get cleaned every 2 weeks on a schedual and that helps too. I feel with what the rope cost and what it does if it looks shabby retire it to hold down something on the bobcat trailer

I wash my ropes in an old pillow case and use "wool wash sope" (sope for washing wool clothing). It removes dirt really well and is gently on your ropes.
I got it recommended by a friend that is very much in to rock climbing.
The "wool wash sope" doesn't contain the same enzymes, that normally washing powder does, so it doesn't damage the rope.

Can you purchase this soap in the USA?

This thread is great! This week I had a big blob of grease that went unnoticed on my boot. so after foot locking it got all over my rope. I am going to wash it in a front loader washer, with hot water, all daisy chained is what I've been told. My question is abot soap I could not find the ivory snow laundry detergent but saw this stuff called seventh generation, sounds like areal ree hugging product. It's non-toxic, biodegradable, hypo-allergenic, free and clear of dyes and perfumes, "natural laundry detergent. The ingredients are: a low foaming blend of naturally derived cleaning agents (coconut derived surfactants, glycerin), natural water softeners, alkalinity builders, and anti-redeposition agents (sodiujm citrate, borax), non-animal derived enzymes, plant derived anti foaming agents, (glycerol monooleate oliec acid) cleaning enhancers, (calcium chloride), and perservatives (less than 0.05%), water. Is that ok stuff to wash my climbing line in?

Hey Johnnie...you may not but it does work and does no harm.

As a test of this I did a side by side test. Last week I went climbing in a large cedar without gloves. When I got down my hands were full of pitch. When I went inside to washup I used olive oil on one hand and then dish soap on the other. The olive oil softened the pitch and it just washed off without any fingernail scrubbing or using a brush. when I washed the other hand I had to scrape and rub the pitch to soften it. It took much longer to use soap and there was less pitch on that hand too. To each their own.

Here are a couple of rope washers, combine them and I think you'd have a great tool.

Read the comments after the instructions for a good discussion about rope washing.

Enlighten us... Why not? For something so pure, not sure why it is viewed as crap. IMOHO

Pure or not, Im not putting oil of any type on my ropes.
Clean my hands with it? Sure.

Ropes? Not a chance!

There isnt anything I've ever had on my lines that a warm water wash in the machine didnt take care of just fine. Including sap.

But hey, knock yourselves out!
