Rope and hitch life span from SRT'ing

Rope and hitch life span from SRT\'ing

I've been on the same hank of velocity since this time last year. I've been exclusive to SRT since March of this year and used for access for the past couple years. Im bad about descending kind of fast and honestly I've glazed a couple climbing lines doing this (DRT), the same goes for my prusiks. I noticed yesterday after inspecting my velocity that there is still a lot of life left and I was surprised considering I descend even faster with my wrench than I ever did DRT. Also my hitch cord seems to last a good bit longer as well. Now I do understand the mechanics between the 2 climbing styles but I was happy about the life span of my rope and thougt I would see how others are doing with the life of their gear.

Re: Rope and hitch life span from SRT\'ing

I noticed the same thing my ropes look brand new for quite a while when using srt. In my case I was so worried about having a reliable hitch that grabbed well that I was never able to set up a system that would let me descend like ddrt on say a pulley saver. I think this is a big part of why I didnt see much for wear I couldnt really abuse it much.

Re: Rope and hitch life span from SRT\'ing

I remember posting about this in an older RW thread. When you are descending at 1 fps in DdRT, your hitch sees 2 fps. Same descent speed in SRT, your hitch sees 1 fps, or, half the amount of rope. All the gear in my SRT system looks great. Very little wear, with very predictable and controlled speeds.

Re: Rope and hitch life span from SRT\'ing

I am finding the same thing with my climbing hitches. They are lasting quite a bit longer. Now the rope on the other hand I am seeing the exact opposite. I had a brand new line on the first climb SRT in the first 20 ft pick because of my foot ascender. GO figure. I have noticed that the foot ascender tears the line up over time. No glazing though, at all.
