It went fine, but I noticed that the weight of the tail of the rope was enough to almost pull the whole works out when I wasn't hanging in the system...but it never did pull it self out.

Come to think of it I've only used the tail of my rope when I am at a lower point in the tree--mainly so I can always get to the ground if I need to. That also means the amount of rope hanging on the FS is relatively light.
Most of the time, and always when I am higher in the tree, I use a throwline for retrieval. The throwline has never budged the bight of the FS rope.
Did you push the first bight through the small ring? It takes a good 'pop' to pull the bight out, but it could come out more easily if the bigger ring is used.
Also, be aware that a smaller line for the FS would make the FS line pull through the ring a little more easily.

Does anyone know if the Mahk Adams/Daniel Martinez technique has flown at comp...

Tim Bushnell, Head Tech at the ITCC, took the photos two or three years ago and liked the technique. If you want to use it at a TCC just run it by the head tech at gear inspection. And again, I don't think you'd have any problem with the bight spilling if you use a throwline rather than a rope for the retrieval line.
