Rec - Climbing pics!

Re: Recreational tree climbers New England?

Is there anyone out there who does recreational tree climbing in New England (or the Northeast), either as an organized or totally informal thing?

I've written a bunch of stories about tree climbing, but most of the people I've come across were down south -- in Georgia, Louisiana and the Carolinas -- or in New York City. I'm working on another story for a Boston newspaper and would love to connect with people in New England who climb for fun, or who show other people how to rec climb.

If anyone has any info on this, please get in touch with me at kari_bod@hotmail.com.

Thanks!

Happy climbing.

I have others to thank for telling me about this product. Can't really say anything bad about it. Maybe a little hard to collapse but that's splitting hairs. Absolute cake to hang in a tree. I just tie it to my climbing line, haul it up, and hang from a webbing sling. It does give you a bit of that sense of security you mentioned in that it's not perfectly flat when loaded.

Just checking this site out, I am a former New Tribe emp...Hey humbolt guy, your just a couple hours drive from the NT camp in Grants Pass. Might be worth the drive to try out a hammock. Their website: http://www.newtribe.com

The treeboat has four securing points, so there is less sway than the portaledge. That and the rising side flaps make for a more secure feel in my opinion.

I climb for fun as well, some of my climbing pics can be seen at http://www.treemonster.com

Yeah I get on sites like this and treeclimbing.com and try to put something together for anyone who would like to come. Its nothing fancy just a bunch of guys and girls having some fun. Tried to get a 4th of July climb with a firework show at the end while watching from the tree but no takers this time around. If you know you will be in the area let me know a few weeks before hand and I could try to line something up. Moss has come once, feel free to ask him how it went.

Re: Recreational tree climbers New England?

Thanks are due to Kari who made the request below in this thread on Buzzboard. I replied to her, we ended up having some great conversations and she wrote an excellent article for the Boston Globe that was published today. The photographs with the article where shot at a group climb in Boston that was run by arborist Greg Mosman, TCI facilitator Paul Buck and myself. Glad that Buzzboard is here to make these kinds of connections possible!

Great article!

The pictures are well-composed too.

The photographer is good. He was using an extreme wide angle, it's amazing what he was able to fit into the frame.

Hey, I'll be in my trees next July 4. I have 4 oaks in my backyard that reach about 85-90 ft. The Empire State building is visible from halfway up. I can see the whole NYC skyline and more from the top. The opposite direction I can watch the sunset over the mountains.

I was up recently and caught a nice fireworks show from the far side of Staten Island. I had my binoculars with me for a closeup view. I can see individual windows on the buildings in NYC with the binocs.

I'm in Rahway, NJ about 12 miles from the city. I was thinking of getting a few people together if anyone's interested.

Keep me in the loop, I've been known to make the drive for a good climb. What species oak do you have? Sound like fine trees.

They're Scarlet and Pin Oaks. I'll try to get some pics this weekend. I also have a Red Maple and Pin Oak in front, but they're city trees with power lines. I'm lucky to have them for shade though. ALB removals stopped across the street from me.
