Rec climb in MA?

Location
Orange, MA
I've only gone out and done this once, and spent an hour up in a nice Beech out in the middle of the woods, literally just "hanging out". So nice to be able to just spend some time in a tree and not be worried about which side you'll work down first, where to climb to next, should you chunk out that big piece of dead, or just lower it in one big piece, etc etc.

I know the weathers been getting nicer, and would like to get more into the habit of spending some leisurely time up in the trees as opposed to always be working in them. Anyone planning on doing a fun climb or two in the New England area soon? I'm out in W. Mass, but not adverse to traveling if the opportunity presents itself.

Bueller? Bueller?

Ok, I wont lie, I kicked a few hangers out of the tree while I was up there, and snapped a few pieces of deadwood out, but hey.....its habit right?

I didnt/wouldnt bring a handsaw with me, I think I read something about people probably being a bit more accepting of it should you be climbing on public land should you be sawless vs. having a saw and having the perception you could possibly damage the tree. Something along those lines anyways.

How far from Mohawk Trails are you? That's where the real good stuff is. I'll take a trip out for that. I'll bet Moss would too. I happen to know for a fact that he will come out of the swamps of JP for a tall enough pine. Oh, and hey Moss how are you doing?

I'm only about 25 minutes from Shelburne and about 45 from the MTSF. I happen to know where the 160'+ pines are out there, but I believe there'd be some permits/allowances to be climbing those. Personally I'd rather go up a big spreading red oak or the likes and take some big swings, but that's just me.

That's correct about MTSF. There are plenty of tall tree options in western Mass. though.

I'm doing well Banjo, long time no see. Time to schedule an eastern Mass. climb date. Western Mass. too, I get out there once in a while. I climb most Fridays and weekends so I'm open to any suggestions for a western Mass. climb date.

Been climbing all winter, just got back from hanging around in swampy woods down south. This is up in the top of a big Loblolly Pine with a South Carolina friend. First limb on this tree was in the 100 ft. range.

And a couple of days ago in a fat (13' 6" CBH, plus 100' height) Eastern Cottonwood near Boston:

I hear there are some extra massive cottonwoods in the Connecticut River Valley.

Big swings are good. They're a little harder to find in woods trees 'cause there's so many branches around nearby trees etc. This woods Red Oak has good swing room:

I know a grove of huge sycamore's if your looking for some big swings. Went to school at Umass, would be willing to meet up sometime and climb. In Metro-west Boston or the Happy Valley.

I know a few good trees on the Umass campus. No one will bother us, their pretty used to people climbing in the trees around campus.
I also know a few college students who could use some exercise!!!! How does that sound to everyone. Maybe something on Sunday March 22nd, around 10ish!!!!! I'm flexible.

I don't think I'll be available for this one, but will most likely be getting into some trees at Look Park prior to the NECISA TCC May 2nd and 3rd. Setup, deadwood, and stuff. I'm also looking to do a wee bit more work at Roger Williams Park sometime before the ISA conference and ITCC in July (tree work day will probably be in late May or June) if there are any takers. Sorry to hijack the thread, I just wish I had more time for rec climbs, but I have to make the most of my other opportunities!

No problem Tom. I would be more than willing to come and help out at either Roger Williams or Look Park. I do plan on competing, and would not want that to be a conflict of interest. As it is not fair to climb the trees prior to competition day. But, I can be ground support and supply a truck and chipper for waste disposal.

I suppose there could be a conflict if you climbed at Look Park, but the trees in RWP won't be comp trees. Just trees in the viewing and nearby area. ...And you would have to win NE first anyway LOL!

(PS, if you are close enough to Look Park, we would gladly accept the clean up help! Will get back to ya on that!)

I'm not close to Look Park, but would be willing to travel for a day or two. To help out with whatever i could. However, the more i think about it the conflict gets bigger. If i was on the ground watching someone-else climb, that could be a advantage for me as well. Might have to give this more thought. I don't want any un-fair advantages.

I probably can't go much further than Boston for a rec climb in the next couple weeks. Roger Williams Park cleanup on the other hand, I can't wait. Hey Tom maybe you should post something about in a more viewed part of Treebuzz. I'll bet you could stir up a lot of good climbers and get a lot of work done.

Come on Marcy, i was trying to get away from you. No, totally kidding and it would be awesome if you would join us. I was planning on inviting you and Ed anyways. The more the merrier. Looking to be a good day of climbing!!!

Anyone else available??
