ratchet straps

Ratchet straps are used commonly on split trees etc.

I've looked at green weight charts rigging rules for pull static loading and dynamic etc.

My question is how do you know you have the right ratchet straps? I know it depends if its a 6" poplar or a 3' willow but are there guide lines rules regs. Or is over kill the best you can your best option every time.

If I have a 20" 50' split ash is a couple 1000 lb straps ok or should I have 8 5000 lb straps? How do you know?

24 inch ash should be about 200 lbs per foot. Figure the weight for whatever length it is. I would use a safety factor of 4-1 so about 4 times what the weight is for the rated straps used.......unless you're going to try to climb.......then a 10-1. And only if the straps can be used in a manner that will actually hold it together. IMHO. And don't forget to calculate the leverage of weight above the straps. Imagine how much torque you can get with a 60 foot lever!!!!? You could move parts of pyramids :)

Something you might consider doing is placing a pole or board in between to keep the two leads from being pushed in or twisting.

Like piping a support cable.

Usually I spend my time with the throw ball put a runner on 1 side then the tail through the other side at a decent crotch then down to a port a wrap then I pull it together with a block and tackle the best I can. Even if I can just snug it up I fell the 2 halves can't spread any farther than that. I do this in most split trees I do cause even if its snug and gets looser as I remove weight that's fine but if it gets tighter I know there's an issue.

But Mike thanks that's a logical way to figure it out.

Thanks guys
