Rabbit prob

Location
Canada
My yard is located at a tree nursery and so far this year we have lost over 50 trees to rabbits.........there are over 80 of them. We have tried everything to get rid of the creatures. Nothing has worked! I think that I have found the solution...........a hired gun.........what do you guys think? /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

WARNING...this vid is graphic and it involves the killing of ground hogs and IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!

My uncle who raises free ranging cattle in missouri, hunts prarie dogs because the holes they leave can break cattles legs, and even the ranchers if their not careful.

I skipped the pics.

There are companies that sell garlic-impregnated pellets that have a good reputation for keeping deer and bunnies away.

How large is the nursery? Motion detectors to turn on radios or other noise makers is an idea. Hungry basset hounds too.

The nursery is way too large for motion detectors, it is a old farm converted into a nursery...............100's of acres and 1000's of trees. The owners have tried using live traps, dogs and the like with no success. Poison is not an option because of the dogs and other wildlife. A network of snares around their "little homes" will be tried next!

Down here they have repellents that you can pray around plants or whatever you want to keep deer away, and it really works well, I think they have it for rodents as well, Ill check today at work and get back to you.

P.S. I never thought Id say wisconsin was down from somwhere.

Thanks a million! Our laws are different up here in Canada, so there are quite a few products that are not available for us to use. That being said, I am still interested in what you find out.

Them critters ar prairie dogs, not ground hogs. Ground hogs are at least big enuf ta eat.
As for the rabbits, they are quite easy to trap. If you have kids around they can be bribed with a small bounty. Small legholds placed in the little depressions they leave while taking a break from their dinner, covered lightly with fresh snow or leaves. I used to use snares made from picture hanging wire and had many a feast. Yummy! Wish I could do it for you. Live traps are a nice thought but way too inefficient and expensive. Try using bait piles in small buckets put on their side, use old oats or other grain, place leghold, snare or conibear at opening of bucket. Conibears are illegal in some places and if you have cats or dogs running loose, they are good as dead if they stick their nose in one. Legholds work best, but you have to tune them a little with a file on the trigger or you will miss the little buggers. As for the Prairie Dogs, the coyote will eat well, and its better than poisoning the environment. God will make more.
Good Luck!

There's a company in Utah or Arizona ,that padd the inside of a Vactor suction truck, and just suck them varments right out of their holes. They clear acres for subdivisons and such with it. They either sell the critters to pet stores or release them elsewhere. If you want I can go through my old files and try to find them for you.

i thought it was fine. just put the warning before the post. i watched it before i saw the warning. /forum/images/graemlins/ahhhhh.gif
