Question For Tony Tressel !!!

Tony, you were at the Pittsburgh Pa. Jamboree on Saturday 5/22/2010. My good friend Lyle Blum observed your friend Derek using an SRT system. Any chance you could post a picture and a desription on what he is using?

I think you are referring to Derek Martin, CountryboyPA on the buzz. If it is, I know last year he was using the F8 system (a variation of it at least) in Competitions.

hello, i did talk to Lyle for a little before my AR in Pittsburgh.

I'd be happy to show you the system i'm using. when i get a little time to set the kids down i'll shoot a short video.

See, you don't need me!

Here it is real quick, did it in about 5 min at the shop this morning. Could be a lot better but i believe you get the idea of the system itself.

The descender is called a Robot made by Kong.

Sorry i'm a little hard to hear.

SRT, simple video

Alright i posted it on YouTube.

SRT video

If a more detailed one is needed or liked i can work on it but it will take more time. Any questions i'll be happy to answer.

Re: SRT, simple video

Derrick,

Could you use a normal figure 8 up top instead of the kong? Probably wont tend as nice as you showed but that would work correct? and how do you normally tie off your single line? do you have it set up in a belay device down on the ground or is it a running butterfly up on the limb your tied into so you can pull it back out when your done and on the ground?

P.S. howd you do in pitt compared to philly?

Re: SRT, simple video

Hi Tyler,

using a regular fig 8 will give the desired effect for descending. But it will be next to impossible to tend any slack.

I like to have my line running over my top tie in point then down the trunk and tied off at the base. You do not need a belay device at the bottom, but one could be used to make you rescue-able from the ground. It would take a very long line though.

With out going into to much detail in writing (and probably confusing you more then helping you) i have used a midline running bowline to tie off at the top. With the tail running to the ground so it can be retrieved. The problem with this is that unless you follow the exact path of the tail on the way down the retrieval won't work. If you want more detail on this i can make a video. (I did use this in both the AR in east and west, since i don't have to retrieve my line)

I did much better in Pitt, i worked out some of my problems i had in Philly and was able to qualify for the master climb. :D thanks for asking.

P.S. I will be climbing SRT in the masters climb June 5th at Hershey Gardens if you would like to come out and see SRT in action. I will be able to answer any questions you have then in person, and visually (always better for me).

That invite to come out and watch the masters goes for everyone. There will be 10 good climbers there. I feel almost anyone of us have the potential to win. And like stated above if there are any SRT questions about the system i'm using, i'll be more then happy to answer them in person and show you how i've been doing things.

Re: SRT, simple video

Just do a search on line for Kong Robot Descender. I've found them at a lot of different rock climbing sites. Not sure how long they last yet. But at 25 dollars i'll be happy to replace it.

Re: SRT, simple video

So my first question is where do you get the kong device and how much is it?

Yeah I follow your line set-up description and makes very sense, being able to watch you do it before I went I can picture it on the aerial rescue.

I was thinking about getting out to Hershey so maybe I'll see you there! If not, keep up the hard work and good luck!

Re: SRT, simple video

Hey Tyler,

I think were working at Longwood Gardens on Wednesday. Doing another crane removal back by the addition, Stop by and say hi. If your able to catch us during lunch brake i'd be happy to show you it or let you try it.

I believe my Robot was purchased from Shelter Tree. But as it was given to me as a gift i can't say for sure. I was just checking online there are a few climbing stores that have it.

Re: SRT, simple video

Yeah I'll try to stop by, not sure what our schedule is but will do! Thanks for the info and yeah I found it for around $25 on numerous sites.

Re: SRT, simple video

Hey Derrick, why did you find that attaching your kong tether to the hitch climber with a carabiner works better than attaching it to the single carabiner below? I tried it with a biner up at the hitch climber and found it clunky. having it attached alongside my prussics allows for one less biner clanking around in my system and leaves my hitchclimber free for other pursuits.

Derrik,
To get away from having a super long line, and still having that rescue-able from the ground effect, tie the two ends or your rope together with a zeplin (or it you dont like that two bowlines). Load the belay device the same way you normally would except the knots have to be ontop of the device. This create an Endless loop, you can lower someone from 100' from the ground with a 200' line.
