Question For Tony Tressel !!!

Re: SRT, simple video

that would work but then your tail would be tied up and you could not go anywhere!

Ok you got me

. I'm not well versed in this type of single line, have only tried it twice. It would have been a pretty good one if I tried it my way woundt it have been.

Sorry for the miss information.

Hey Derrick, why did you find that attaching your kong tether to the hitch climber with a carabiner works better than attaching it to the single carabiner below? I tried it with a biner up at the hitch climber and found it clunky. having it attached alongside my prussics allows for one less biner clanking around in my system and leaves my hitchclimber free for other pursuits.

I like to be able to take the Robot off completely. Especially if i'm going to use the rope trick, its one less thing that can potentially get caught. Also i take it off when advancing my tie in point. But that's a whole different trick. I do agree it does get a little clunky. You wanna watch side loading the carabiner that connects the Robot (can be prevented with a blue bandit.) I've never needed any more than one extra hole on the hitchclimber for any other uses so this works well for me.

You never find the need to completely disconnect your Robot?

Re: SRT, simple video

hmm, not really, It pretty much stays on ll the time. when not in use i clip it to the biner that carrys my saw, but it is still attached to my hitch biner. for advansing my TIP i kind of use it as a a throw weight to pull the whole unit over the crotch. My robot is starting to wear out pretty good but i think it is working better a little wore out.

Re: SRT, simple video

Cool video Derrick, I'm definitely going to pick up a Kong Robot sometime soon.

Here's another question. I was using this technique the other day on some removals, specifically working on the spar. What's the best and easiest way to tie off onto the spar and be able to retrieve your rope from below. Running bowline with a long tail or maybe a midline bowline with a long tail?

Re: SRT, simple video

Either tie off works. If you use a midline eye, bowline or butterfly, etc. be sure to use a screw link for small diameter stems. Using a biner to choke against a rounded surface can put bending loads on the biner spine.

If I want a pull down I'll tie off a running bowline in the end and then attach a smaller diameter cord to the rope to use as a pull down. Throwline will work too.

Re: SRT, simple video

Check out the monkey tail system that odis uses. Esspecially on big spars it makes retrieval and manuvering easier. I usually use a midline bowline. tieing a runing bowline with a long tail is a PIA.

Re: SRT, simple video

I'll make a video of the midline bowline that i use. Its simple quick, doesn't require another rope or a long tail.

Tyler, i'm not going to be at Longwood. They pulled me off of it because they need a climber on the other crew.

Kevin, Not sure how it helps with advancing your TIP. I'll show how i do mine. Don't think i'll be leaving any big secret out of the bag for my Masters Climb, don't think anyone else will be doing it SRT.

Re: SRT, simple video

That's the other thing, whats the best way to advance your TIP when climbing with SRT? When I had a ground anchor I would have to haul up the other end of my rope and toss it over a higher TIP. Is this how you guys do it, or am I missing some magic trick here?

Re: SRT, simple video

until you get to where you need to go, all you need to do is pass the hitch over. then once you get to where you need to go, then pull the rest of the line over. thats what i was saying I throw my kong over the crotch first because its a little more throwable than the rest of my hitch contraption.

Re: SRT, simple video

I have a trick, but i need to make a video so that its done thoroughly.

We go over to my parents for dinner tonight so we'll have help with the kids. Maybe i'll have time to shoot some video then.

Re: SRT, simple video

Hey, can someone do me a favor and put a "T" on the end of my last name for the title of this Thread!

I know I know, but every time I see it it drives me a bit crazier and that is scary!!

Are we calling a midline bowline and a bowline on a bite the same thing?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep. The midline is preferred because the midline bowline can be tied anywhere on the line and not have to pass an end through the bight or loop, where as an alpine butterfly you have to pass the opposite end through the loop.

Re: SRT, simple video

Ranger hit the nail on the head. The big advantage to the midline bowline is that it can be tied or untied with out having to pass an end through it.

I'm going outside now to work on a couple video's. Hopefully tonight i can have them online.

Re: SRT, simple video

it cant be tied midline around your line. with a butterfly you have to thread the tail with the end of the rope. basically a midline bowline you grab a bight of rope and tie a running bowline with the bite. not to be confused with a bowline on a bite, which is another thing completely

Re: SRT, simple video

Good explanation Kevin. I shoot some video of me tying it. I would say if your using it to climb off of, i would back it up with either a carabiner or use the yosemite tie off. Since a bowline in itself is not good for life support as it can work loose with continous slack and tightning.
