q's on new spurs purchase

Wanted to add if you can afford it don't worry too much about cost, they're going to last you years maybe decades, good gear that fits right let's you work faster more safely, hurts less on and off the job and has a long term positive impact on your body and ability to work. You'll make 10s maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars on that pair of gaffs, if your one of the guys that just does it for free for friends and family make them buy them for you.

Thanks for the input Vincente. Ive got a pair of climb rights and big buck pads now for the last 6 years. They get the job done but I dont know any different. Tried on a couple other pairs but never got to try em out long enough. Doing some reading, the permanent buck steels might just be what Im looking for. Weight reduction is nice but it honestly isnt the biggest factor for me. I think those paired with the caddy pads, I might have a winning combo.

Very soon I’ll be posting for sale a pair of Buckingham steel permanent tree gaffs, and a pair of Bashlin aluminum with tree gaffs. The Bashlin shanks show some wear but should be good for another 3,000 miles. I cleaned the Bucks up in the sand blast cabinet and rattle canned them, they’ll last forever probably. I think I got angled shin cup pads for both.
@Grafted_In holler if interested, I think shipping to Hawaii costs same as any other state if using USPS

I run both the replaceables and the permanents with caddy pads, and love them both. I use the 2-3/4” replaceables on 90% of my climbs, and save the 3-1/2” permanents for the super shaggy barked OG stuff. Most guys here would never need the 3 1/2” gaffs, as they are way too long.

@rico copy that. 3.5” is pretty damn long but figured i could file em down if anything. The more acute angle on the permanent looked nice but maybe nominal.

Been poking around for . . . new KK's or carbon Distels or . . . . seems 1) availability is a BIG problem all over for some reason (Germany seems to have carbon Distels but wont ship non EU) and 2) GASP the prices have gone into orbit, even allowing for the Canadian 75 cent piece (pretend dollar). This has to factor into purchase decisions so for now it's still the good old Buckingham TI's I guess. Some online sites like the KK's look to be just parts and stickers . . . or am I missin' something?
I’ve wanted to post a new thread about this so it’s good to see I’m not the only one who’s tried and failed to find some Kiwi Klimbers. I’ve consistently checked their site for over two years now and they have never had them in stock. Any Aussies or Kiwis know what the deal is? Are they not making them any more? @ghostice Honey Bros has carbon distels in stock, but you are right about the crazy prizing. Almost 9 bills and that’s not shipped across the pond. I just bought myself a pair of aluminum distels as a back up because I was tired of waiting. Thanks for any pertinent info on the KK’s.

Dale is pretty chill if you reach out directly. He may have posted an update on KKs on his IG account. I used mine yesterday to take down a dead pine. They were expensive, but I keep using them and they are nice. I never think about discomfort other than wanting to unweight off my foot bed occassionally.

Hey you're right 'bout HoneyBros carbon Distels but at @1050.00 highly devalued Can pretend dollars plus shipping and Trudeau Tax (duty and GST) I'm kinda checked out for now. Not sure when "demand destruction" will kick in for climbing gear but we're gettin' there for me anyway. Part of it might be that the UK is outa the EU now? More duty for them? Just speculation on my part.

I’ve had a good run out of my Aluminium Distel Geckos so far. Buckingham lowers are a must, they are cheap to get here in Aus, lighter than what most climbers use around here. 2.2 kgs a set. Weight while climbing isn’t as much the concern for me, it’s walking a long way into jobs in rough terrain with your gear. I think the aluminum with carbon fiber shin cups is a good compromise between weight and longevity.
Not the greatest spur design being straight shank but I still find they climb well and are comfy.
Also a spikescender can be bolted on if you are into that.

Those are going back a few. Nice wear! The new profile of the Distels is fluted, so there may be a comparability issue unlike the ones in your photo. I have an older pair with a kiwi klimber attached, and a newer pair without any ascender at all.

As far as the fit and comfort, I 100% agree with you. They’re light enough, and all day comfy. I use Buck velcro lowers on both pair of mine.
