Pruning Standard--No Comment since 2008?

The best-kept secret in the US segment of the tree care industry is this announcement that the A300 committee is attempting to reaffirm the current 2008 version of the A300 Pruning standard. The text is below, with the odd statement that "no comments or suggestions for improvement for the Pruning standard were received by TCIA since 2008."

This must be a typo. We've seen many calls for changes to this standard in TCI magazine, and also presented at Expo. Now's the time to check your 2008 copy and think about how it works, or doesn't work for you. Compared to the standards in advanced countries like Germany and the UK, the text is obscure, and lacking guidance and information. The A300 committee has no working arborists participating, and recently floated a change in its Bylaws that, unlike the Z133 committee, for instance, does not allow any input from Observers at its meetings. So it's up to us to review this and submit comments to Mr. Rouse and your committee reps, listed below.

May 8, 2014
ANSI A300 (Part 1)-2008 Pruning Standard Reaffirmation Notice

ANSI A300 (Part 1)-2008 Pruning standard is in public review for a proposed reaffirmation of the
standard. Reaffirmation means the standard is reaffirmed for up to an additional 5–year period as is,
without substantive changes. This decision was reached since no comments or suggestions for
improvement for the Pruning standard were received by TCIA since 2008.
Once the reaffirmation is approved, the A300 committee will begin working on the next revision of the Pruning standard (projected for 2016).
The public review period runs May 9, to June 23, 2014. Since this is a reaffirmation of a
standard, your public review draft copy is your copy of the ANSI A300 (Part 1)-2008 Pruning standard,
to order call TCIA at 800-733-2622. Send questions or comments on the reaffirmation to Bob Rouse,

Thanks Guy for the nudge.
Not to quibble, but I believe that Ed Macie has replaced Keith Cline as the voting member under "General Interest - Environment - USDA" and that I am the alternate:

Happy to be corrected on this!

Kevin, I hope you're right! I just cutandpasted the list from the TCIA site; maybe they need a nudge, too. ;)

I know your agency does many things, but it seems ironic that A300 calls USFS an environmental group. Maybe that takes the place of inviting in any of those pesky 'green' people.

So you're on Mast Road, was that named after all the acorns and beech nuts?

Thanks Guy, I'll check out the TCI site with respect to the listing.
I'm sure there is a history for the regulary inclusion of the the USDA Forest Service as a participant in development of the pruning standard. I'm not on the "inside" of the standards-setting process such as who is included and who is not, I just know a little about how trees work!
As for the "Mast Road" in my Durham lab address, that refers to eastern white pine and ship masts. This part of New Hampshire was well-settled in early colonial days and the straight white pine timbers were used for ship masts. Actually, all white pine above a certain threshold size belonged to the British monarch, regardless of who owned or held the grant to the land. Felling those trees required a royal warrant, although I'm sure that log-jacking occurred. Mast Road led to the Oyster River and the Great Bay which facilitated access and shipping of timbers up and down the east coast and back to Britain. British Navy ships began being built in the late-17th Century on what is now the border between New Hampshire and Maine. More than you wanted to know, I'm sure!
